Ideas for running carbon on a large tank?

I have a couple of extra drains and I plan on making a carbon filter using some 4 inch pvc and pantyhose. I will post some pictures when I am done.

I just use phosban reactors- can't beat it for the price- under $30. I run 2 of them in series with the water supply coming from my skimmer pump through a gate valve. but you can do as many as you need to.

beat me too it blfuller123. yeah thats exactly what i was thinking but isnt it a certain kind? dye free or something?

This is how I have mine set-up. I need to add a phos. reactor, and an ozonce reactor to the set-up. But this set-up works great for me.

I've got a GEO chamber that I run carbon and phos in. I'm sure there are other manufactures with similar units. I tried the two fishes phosban reactor, and was pretty unimpressed other than the price (prone to leaking, too small of a chamber, other too much or too little flow, etc).

Mines a MRC, works good. Not much too them anyways. I plan on getting another, smaller one, for a phos reactor soon.

I like to manafold idea so that I can have a few water outlets to different reactors and also be able to control the flow. I just have a small Sequence Dart on the manafold.

Yeah, I just stack, so I can run one :)

The unit is on the right. It has a foam filter on the bottom, then carbon, then filter, then rowa in two bags weighed down by some small chunks of live rock.

Stop by the "geo" thread, there is a ton of good info in there about setup and such. I've only had mine a couple of weeks, but it's rock solid right now.

Thats cool.

I'm ordering my Calcium Reactor from Geo next week! You like yours?

You got a link? Thanks!!

Thanks for all the good info. I am getting lots of ideas. The MRC and GEO reactors seem very cool (and much less $ that the rediculously priced deltec). I was considering the phosban too, but how many would be needed on a 500g system?

I'm liking the carbon in panty hose in a 4" perforated pipe/pvc pipe idea the most though. I'm think about coming out of the skimmer into that pipe - maybe use a filter bag instead of the pipe. hmmm.

Keep posting ideas please.

I have about 6-8 cups on my 320ish system, but that might be overkill (have leathers and SPS). Personally, once you pass about 200 gallons, I think it's more of a pain stacking 2-3+ of the phosban reactors on (I had two before converting). You could almost buy a larger unit for that price when you include the pumps, etc.

Also, make sure you don't have TOO much water pushing through the carbon. You can break it down if you flush too fast. Rowa, phos, etc are even more sensitive.

Here's a pic of my multi-media reactor which includes a carbon chamber. The baskets are not installed in this pic.

It will hold 1 to 6 gallons of carbon.

Here's a pic of one of the baskets.

I put carbon in its basket, then a PVC sreen, then floss, and then PVC screen. It is gravity fed (downflow) to the carbon chamber.
