Identity?

Hi all,

I have found something new and interesting in my tank. I had to change out my 20 gallon tank last night due to a leak on my bow front tank. I transferred everything to a 10 gallon tank (only have LR, hermits, couple of snails and a condy). At any rate, tonight I noticed an empty hermit shell against the glass and this long, thin pale-looking thing coming out of the shell and making its way down into the substrate. It looks to be over an inch long for as much as I can see of it and almost looks like a tentacle of some kind. It may just be some kind of worm, I don't think it is the bad kind though, but I never noticed it before I stirred up that substrate. Anyone got a link for worm identification or perhaps some kind of mussel?

Thanks,

Mhart

Unfortunately, it has pulled shell and all down under the substrate by this morning. Do you know if there are any pics online anywhere showing the syphon. I know there used to be a website that had a lot of pics of unusual items for identity verfication but I can't remember it now.

Thanks for the links, I didn't see anything there that resembled this thing though. I may never identify it since it buried itself, but it is definately living in an old hermit shell and even pulled the shell down under the substrate with it. Basically it stretched itself out a little over an inch into the substrate, so that leads me to believe it is pretty long since the rest of it was in the shell. I might try to pull it out tomorrow and get some pics.

What you saw may be the origanal "resident" of the shell (hermits dont make their own shells, they steal them)! Try to id. the type of shell, and you may discover the id. of your "new" resident.

you say you seen a "syphon" of a snail (the proboscis). that sounds like it may actually be a snail. without a pic its going to be near impossible to tell what it is.

your from K'vegas huh? good to see another local person on here :D! have you seen the NC & SC thread?

I will have to check out that NC thread, I've moved from K'vegas though, in the city now. K'Vegas got too big for me. *L*

I still haven't seen hide nor hair of this critter since it pulled the shell down into the substrate. Perhaps it will turn up again one day.
