ID's & Advice "PLEASE"

Hi all,

After some ID’s and advice from you more experienced reefers.

The following pics are from my live rock tank that’s been set up in my shed for about 3 months while waiting to go into my new project build once complete.

There is plenty of flow in the tank, it’s running on 10 hours of power compact lighting and I’m completing 25% fortnightly water changes.

If possible I’m wanting some ID’s on the different algae’s and advice as to witch algae’s to keep and what I need to get rid off??????

Some of the live rock will be going directly into my display and the remaining into my refugium.

Sorry about the photo quality, a good DSLR is next on the list once the tank project is up and running.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Cheers J

Going from left to right

The first pic - red, no idea

The second pic - green bubble algae ( possibly valonia ), undesireable, can be tough to erradicate, in a display with a good variety of herbivores and goo nutrient control it shouldnt be a problem.

The third pic - also seen in some of the other pics, possibly cladophoropsis, generally undesireble, same basic controls as bubble algae.

The 4th pic - Caulerpa, possibly nummularia or peltata, tough to control in a display, most herbivores wont touch it.

The rest of the pics look like more of the same, if there are specific ones hidden in the photos then a closer in focus will be needed, A better shot of the first may help with id as well.

1 looks a bit like Byropsis, a nasty weed.
The others, as mentioned are Valonia, another weed and the smaller ones are Mermaid's wine glasses in melt form to some degree, a few will keep growing more than likely. I considered it a nasty weedy species in natural systems, but in tanks, many like it.

You do not want any of these species in refuge or a reef tank.

David and Tom,

Thank you both for your responses, really appreciate your help.

You stated, “You do not want any of these species in refuge or a reef tank”, so how do I go about eradicating these algae’s.

1.Obviously start by manually removing as much as possible, is it OK to scrub to rock while keeping it in the water as to not expose the coralline algae to too much air (out of water)?
2.Continue with RO/DI water changes, keeping excess nutrients low.
3.Reduce photo period and if so can you give a rough idea of an appropriate photo period?
4.Maybe look at purchasing some herbivores to assist, any ideas i.e. a Tang or some inverts, (I have two Turbo Snails at present)?

The rock will be in this tank for about 4 more weeks prior to going into my new display and was hopping to have this algae problem sorted.

Once again guys, thank you for your help.

Look forward to your response.

Cheers J
