If you don't have a refugium, get one..

For over a year I always had an algae problem. Although not a big one, it was there. Mainly the redish/brown algae on the sand. I was using a Skilter Protein skimmer that I never could get to work so I changed 5 gallons of water out of a 30 gallon every two weeks.

Two weeks ago I turned my HOB Skilter into a mini fuge. I put a baseball size piece of Chaeto in it and bought a clip on light from home depot with a 5500K bulb.

I've slowly watched my algae on the sand bed dissappear. The Chaeto is getting bigger and my corals even seem to be opening up more now.

And this is just the beginning of the improvements. I'm mad at myself because I've waited this long to incorporate chaeto.

Same with me. I had a horrible algae problem but once I got my fuge going it slowly started to go away.

I love when you do something to your tank and it actually works lol

I had a coral that I thought was dead. It hadn't opened up in weeks, maybe a month even. Corraline was starting to grow over it so I gave up on it. When i tested the water I would always get 0-10 on the Nitrates.

Now, two weeks after adding the refuge. it's starting to open up again. wow
