I'll take perfect bouyancy and trim for $500 Alex!

The 5th Dimension folks have great resources their videos are well done. I watched that video many times, but my SMB deployments still look nothing like that. The video of me performing that task would make for a good laugh.

Heh... Nope, that's Andrew Georgitis - the owner of 5thD and my first Fundies instructor.

I recognize the way that he uses the double-ender to coil the spool after he deploys the SMB and it's hit the surface. It was distinctively AndrewG. :)

A big hint, of course, is the fact that he owns the company that made the video. :)

I actually watched him remove one of his first stages and replace a buddy's... All underwater. Without losing bouyancy. During class. Without doffing his rig.

Seriously, diving with the guy was life-changing for me. The only thing I could say to him was, "Holy smokes, how do you do that genie crap?" Lol... I'd never seen anything like it before. In all honesty, after diving with him and then seeing myself on video (they video the class), I honestly questioned whether or not I should be diving at all. I felt the way that someone might feel the first time they stand at the bottom of Mt. Everest and decide to climb to the top. I seriously almost gave it all up that day.

The truth is, diving with him was like having someone remove the clouds, so you could see the top, and see how freakin' high that bar really was. When I saw it for the first time, I was shocked. The video doesn't do it justice. I almost quit that day, I was so intimidated. In fact, I think I did quit for a minute or two... Then I got mad when someone pointed out that I was quitting. :)

I actively worked on the skills for months - years, really - then stopped focusing on the skills and started focusing on the dive. The mix, for me, has done amazing things, and it all seems natural now. I don't know that I'm up to AndrewG standards, but I'm very flattered to be compared to him. :) That's a pretty big compliment.

AndrewG was pivotal in creating some of GUE's standards with regards to buoyancy in the upper classes, and served on GUE's board of directors for many years. Since then, I believe that there's been a "falling out" of sorts, and Andrew is no longer a GUE instructor.

Last I heard, Andrew owned the company that makes the X-Scooter.

Now, it's possible that this ISN'T AndrewG (tough to tell with the mask covering most of his face), but if it isn't, it's one of his deciples and looks an awful lot like him. :)

Interestingly, Andrew is one of the only true vegans that I've ever met. More on my experiences with him during my first Fundies course is at http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/basic-scuba-discussions/21992-dir-class-truth-comes-out.html

Heh. Well, I didn't wanna get any on me. :) You're talking to a guy that brings his own toilet paper on the trip! :)

Lol... Actually, I did have to buy a new wetsuit and rethread my harness with some new webbing.

I also had to replace a whole slew of tools. The stuff is still on my backup lights and the purge button of my primary second stage. :)

...But yeah, that was fun the way that worked out, wasn't it? Good skill builder, for a very practical reason. :)

The best was when you were hovering next to me and holding the lights so that I could see what I was doing while texturing... Or my back gas, on your back! :D

I was just reading the link you posted about your Fundies class, and especially the OOA drills... Heck, you and I already mastered that one, a few times! ;)

It did kinda suck though that last time that I sucked every last breath out of my tank, thinking that you would be Johnny-on-the-spot and stuff a fresh reg into my mouth (like you did the 1st time), only to discover that you had already surfaced due to your own OOA... Good times my friend, GOOD TIMES!

Before anyone freaks out questioning what the hell we were thinking, WE WEREN'T, we were too busy working in 23' of cold water to bother wasting time with the little stuff. I mean really, it was only 23 feet deep and we were in front of a huge viewing pane at the Georgia Aquarium, so if anything actually did go bad, the patrons would have surely noiticed and found a security guard that would have verified that "Yep, they'se drownin" and would have then in turn contacted somebody to contact somebody to contact somebody to ask 1 of our surface support peeps to dig us out. :D

Seriously though, IT WAS ONLY 23 FEET! ;)

Thanks for the link to the fundies class you took. Great read.

Thanks! :)

Hahahahaaa... You mean I was slackin'? Daggommit! :)

Yeah, I watched that video the other day, and the deployment of the SMB got lost for me as I watched in amazement at the incredible bouyancy.

And the 1st time I saw any element of bouyancy like that was while diving with you!

At the risk of getting my nose lodged firmly in your ***, it was after watching you and your abilities that made me want to learn become a superior diver.

YOU COMPLETE ME! :D

No, seriously, HE IS THAT GOOD! :eek2:

SeaJay will instill within you a desire to be that good yourself, because he's focused on creating well trained, safe, dive buddies. If you look back several months through this forum, you'll clearly see that I didn't always understand it that way, yet his advice (once taken to heart) has likely kept me alive!

Tim, you been perusing Scubaboard?????
The reason I ask is because the youtube video was associated with a thread about SMB's and finger spools over there which is where I first saw it.

Yep, saw it there a week ago.

I will add however that I have probably seriously ****ed a few folks off over there in the last couple of days, because as we all know, you are not allowed to have your own opinion if it conflicts with anyones elses perception of pretty much anything...

Hahahhaaa... GUILTY! :D

Yeah, I've been perusing it too. :) I was a regular there like seven years ago, and somehow got banned (still don't know why). When they started talking about my TV show, I couldn't help myself - I called NetDoc (site owner and buddy) and asked if I could come back. Somehow, through the years, they've forgotten why I was banned - a good thing, I suppose. :)

Interestingly, he asked me not to come back as my old moniker ("SeaJay"), but instead to come back as my company name, "Deep South Divers." (Supposedly, he's going to combine the accounts soon.)

...Which wildly conflicts with what Tim mentions above. I've stopped trying to figure it out. :)

Tim: Thanks, buddy. :) You da man. :) Just remember it when someone asks you if they can dive with you... Or when someone asks, "What's that DIR thing all about?" :)

I love havin' you on my team, man. :)

DeepSouthDivers.org is getting completely rebuilt here soon - I'm going to need a bio on you, with photos (hopefully in your new gear) for the site. :)
