ok our Arizona (FRAG) club did a group buy on rics etc from sealife florida. this will be my first time getting rics. is there anything special i have to do when i get them before adding them to my tank? like a FW dip or acclimate? if i have to acclimate how do i do it? i have regular mushrooms but never had rics yet.

I would say the opposite actually, as low light as possible and acclimate slowly, especially in a smaller tank with a 150w 14k hqi, rics can burn really easily, especially any bluer ones

Third opinion .. florida rics like light, but I wouldn't put them up near the top.
Mine look their best in low flow and moderate to high light.

Forth opinion.

Florida rics love light. I have mine under 14k 150watt sunpod.

I think people get floridas and yumas confused. Floridas light more light, yumas like lower light.

its better to start them off in a low light erea then slowly move them up.. an yes acclimate them.. with lights off ..IMO..thats the way i do mine..

i was planing on keeping them on the sand because the top part of my tank is zoo's and mid is frogspawn etc.

when you guys say acclimate do you mean like pouring water in the containor every 10 minutes? or do i just float the bag to get the temp the same and then put them in my tank? so there is no need to dip them for pests or anything like you do with zoo's?

I actually have a tiny little siphon specifically for acclimating. It has a little nozzle on one end you can adjust so you can have 1 drop every second or a bunch of drops every second. i usually do this in a measuring cup or this big container that has measurements on it for like juice or tea- let it drip until the water volume is at least double after temp acclimating

I am getting some florida rics for the first time next week too. I have 130w of PC lighting on my 29g (30" L x 18" H x 12" W) but I can't put them near the top as i have a Hammer, Frogspawn and Torch up there...I was thinking of putting them in the open but down near or on the substrate, will this be all right?

thats what i started off with but it was in a 75g with PCs..an they did just fine sitting on the bottom..so IMO, YES..

Just float them to temp and put them in. FL ricordias are very hardy. You can also keep the lights on and they should open right away unless you have a water quality problem. Lighting shouldn't make a difference unless you are putting them under very high MH. There are almost 30 FL ricordias in this tank and they were all temp floated and placed directly in. Never lost one yet.

The more light, the better they will look. I used to keep mine under PCs 3 x 65 watt in my 29 gallon and the difference was literally night and day between what they looked like under MH and PC.

Under PC lighting:

Same rics and same tank under 14k MH:

Yeah, they'll do fine under PC. I wasn't saying you have to upgrade.
About tank placement, low flow works best IME.

My rics under 192w of PC in my 10"deep tank, look pretty good, I have fallen in love with them, although i know when my 29g w/ HQI is ready, THEY ARE MOVING ON UP!
