I posted here yesterday about the 250 I got off craigs list for 50 bucks I have no experience with large tanks. I have to clean the tank and see where I stand on any work it needs part of the trim is missing but it looks like to me that it did nothing for structural support. Do tanks of this size require the trim to hold it together like the smaller tanks do? I am going to re do the silicone what kind should I use, I have a tube of silicone in the garage I got at the lfs is it all the same? This is going to be a large volume of h2o I cannot afford a mistake at this point. Thanks for any info you guys can provide.

Sounds like a big job, good luck. I would check and see what type of silicone the larger tank manufacturers use since it may perform better than the kind your LFS carries. Also, the trim most likely did offer the tank structural support.

Check the DIY forum for info on reworking the tank.

Essentially though.. the silicone that actually holds the tank together, in between the glass pieces is a special kind of silicone, that is far stronger than the stuff you can get at home depot or your LFS.

The silicone that you actually see in all of the corners doesn't really do much for structural integrity, it's there as a secondary seal.

If you're talking about scraping/cutting out the silicone in the corners and redoing it, you're probably ok with the regular stuff. If you're talking about actually taking the glass panels completely apart and putting them back together again -- call a professional.

Im not going to take it apart but i am going to reseal it I think I am foing to call glass cages and see if they can build new top and bottom trim for me. I just measured the tank and its a 210 not 250 no matter though I am still going to use the tank.
