Imperator Angel

My Imp is doing very well and grunts loud enough to hear on the main floor. He hasnt bothered any clams or corals and eats everything given to him. Hes starting to change even though hes only about 3.5-4 inchs.

Thats one pretty fish....Is that a Yellow tang behind him? I was worried about aggression with my Yellow Tang.

Thanks
Scott

Yes thats a yellow tang. Before adding the angel, the yellow would harass every new fish I put into the tank until I added a 5-6 inch hippo tang who became "boss". Now the yellow hides from the bigger fish and does not bother anyone so the angel got used to the tank fast. The Imp has grown alot in the short time we've had him. I dont think the yellow would have bothered the angel in any case.

I am having a similar problem. I have a 8 inch Hippo which is the dominant Tang. He never gets touched. However I have a YT and a Orange Shoulder that are both about 5 inches...They routinely fight. There fins are always torn up and the OST can't grow streamers. I was hoping by adding a large Angel it will help spread the aggression. I am not going to add any more tangs. I think that 3 are more than enough

I have four tangs in my tank, but there are never any torn fins. The Purple Tang is the king of the tank. One day I would like to add a juvenile Imperator and/or a Blue Face. I'm afraid that the Purple Tang might not like the extra company.

I agree, no more tangs for me too. I always wanted a Powder Blue Tang, but after three attempts, I have given up (actually more like my wife said 'no more Powder Blue Tangs!':p )

I've had a juvenile, about 3 inches, for about 3 months. So far, he's been a great fish - hasn't picked at corals or clam, nor on any of the smaller fish. No aggression in either direction with my flame angel (slightly larger and longer established) or larger Purple, Blue Hippo, or Sailfin Tangs. Also pair of Maroon clowns, 3 different fairy wrasses, large foxface, and copper-banded butterfly. He did show a new tendency tonight of stealing krill out of the mouths of my sun coral, which bothered me a bit. I know it's still early, and don't put too much weight in my positive experience - a lot of growing and changing ahead.

keep us updated, i think the imps are one the most beautiful fish available in the hobby. good to know some people are having good experiences in reef tanks

I had an emp in my reef for about 5 years. He ate only zoos (booo!) and aiptasia (yeah!). Other than that, his puproses was to make every other fishes life absolutely miserable. He even beat the hell out of the chromis. No mercy. He died unexpectedly, which was very sad, but I was beginning to regret keeping him in the 120. They will need a BIG tank if you want to keep them with other fish for a long time.

I have had a very similar experiance as jmaneyapanda. I have had one for a year and a half. I bought him as a juv. and he has almost completed his change. I can not keep any zoos in the tank without him eating them and because of him I have never had a problem with aiptaisia. He also runs the tank but I have never seen him do any damage to my other fish (atleast not yet). I definatly recommend a BIG tank as well. I have a 125 and he looks great, but I can tell he could use a little more room.

I have a pretty big tank. I am slightly concerned about the zoas though. I love my colonies. I guess it depends on the fish so I will give it a try. I will update once I get him/her

My juvie is just over 4". Similar size to the PBT, Yellow Tang and newly introduced BlueLine Angel. They all get along really well. I think the most picked on fish is my pair of Heniochus - they are universally loathed for some reason.

How are your angels with the corals?? As for my Emp I am having a hard time getting one locally. None of my LFS have them. Actually one LFS has a small adult but its in a hospital tank right now recovering from a fungus infection. I hate to go with a small adult because I think half of the fun with these fish is the color change. I had the LFS I frequent the most order two medium Juvs..So we will see how that turns out next week.

I placed my order wth the wholesaler. So next week I will have a Emp. I also ordered a Potteri too. I was thinking of introducing them at the same time....I hope this goes well. I am pulling all of the zoos I have out and placing them in the seahorse tank. Hopefully these guys will have a taste for mushrooms, xenia, gsp.

My Emp only eats Zoos - doesn't touch the shrooms. And my 2 Centropyge angels don't eat any coral.... I want to get a Potters too. :)

My Emp is a model citizen with one exception. He doesn't touch the clams, leathers, SPS, LPS, shrooms or my RBTA. But, he did kill one haddoni. I got a second with a very protective pair of orange skunk clown fish and they keep him away so all is good.

Hello Scott

Since zoos are pretty easy to remove, I would consider testing the new additions with the zoos in the tank first. You never know, the risk is more likely only with the Emperor. And then if you see that he has a taste for it, then you can remove the zoos. I suggest this because there would be a better chance of the Emperor not bothering the zoos if they are already in the tank before him, but if you add the zoos afterwards, there will be a greater chance that he will sample the zoos.

Just my $.02.

Ok so I will only pull my beloved Fire & Ice zoas. I will leave the rest of the colonies in their for now.
