How big are the hermits? Large ones will attack a fish at night as they sleep.

Whatever happened, it doesn't look disease-related to me. However, the lip may get infected. All you can do is wait & see.

The hermits are small-medium in size. He had no signs last night. Every one was happy.
Almost forgot, i have 2 emerald crabs also. Have had all these guys for over a month.

Emerald crabs are much faster than hermits and could possibly try to take down a small fish.

IME all crabs are opportunistic feeders that will try to eat whatever they can.

IMO, all crabs get much better press that they deserve. Could have been a Chromis mating ritual or, more likely, the other chromis. Chromis are well known for thinning their own kind down to one survivor.

the other chromis is half the size of this one. this one is def. the dominant one from what i have seen. im wondering if the clarkii could have done it? i have seen the clarkii try to bully this chromis. sometimes it will back down, sometimes it fights back.
