If it is a 29 gal, any intank refugium is going to look ugly IMO. Not to mention the extra unreachable surfaces where algae is going to thrive and make the whole thing uglier!.

My in tank refugium consists of a wad of cheato wedged between the skimmer bubble diffuser and the wall of the tank. It works very well, lots of pods. Here is a pic:

I wouldn't do it. You would need a much bigger refug to support the amount of pods that a mandarin will need.
