inherited a 12g Nano cube... Have questions

jimi thing

I was given a 12g nano cube and stand. My question, is it worth setting this little thing up or would it make more sense to look into something a little bigger? The Nano cube is stock with no mods, meaning that I'd want to upgrade lighting and water flow. Looking to mainly do a softy, lps tank. Thanks for any advice or links to possible cheap (but decent) led lighting. It'll be weird getting back into the hobby after being out for 4-5 years.

If you're doing softies and LPS, it's not a bad way to go. JUST DON'T MOD IT OR UPGRADE IT. If you're really starting new, and want a warm-up, then stick with it, see how far you can take it, and then when you can't stand a basic tank anymore, pass that tank along and buy a 40g breeder or larger tank.

For reference, about half of the people who have been in this nano forum for >12 months have moved on to larger tanks. I would have too, but I can't in the location I'm in. Nano is harder, there's more to go wrong, it's harder to mod, and it's limited on space and available modifications.

I think that the old recommendation of a 55 gallon tank as a good "starting" tank is still spot on, and if you want smaller, would recommend a 40g breeder tank (shallow and wide).
