Inside LR

I broke a piece of branched LR and inside the middle of brown flesh like material. What is this? It made the rock very odorous.

Could be a sponge. Whatever it was, is probably dead and hopefully was removed.

It looks like the marrow of a chicken bone. It goes all the way thru. Cant pull it out thats for sure.

I would say its a sponge w/o a pic. They are good for a tank but will rarely live through being exposed to air.

A good rule to go by = If it stinks pretty bad.. get rid of it.

It could have been bacteria. Do you have a picture of it?

The odor your smelling is probably hydrogen sulfide from the anaerobic spots in your LR. If you can take it out, whatever it is, then do it.
