Just recently purchased this frag f. They came looking like this. I figured it was from shipping or acclimating to a new tank. What causes the polyps to look almost as if the middle is stretching high?

mine do that when they are pooping, and sometimes when they get ****ed....mostly my magicians and red PE's do this.

I call that "umbrella syndrome", like other people also do.

They could have many reasons to manifest that type of behavior, like for example too much light, little light, low/high water flow, water chemistry, irritators, and, the most common temporary reason: part of the normal metabolism!! A combo of the reasons could also be the case, but most of the time there is nothing to worry about. I never heard of zoanthids perishing because of umbrella syndrome.

Because the polyps were recently introduced to your system you would think that maybe would be a good idea to try raise them up, closer to the light, but be careful not to shock the polyps, because they could bleach. Use common sense, specially if you've got LEDs running.
Good luck!

Grandis.
