Insurance Claim....Where to Find Zoa Prices

Well, here on the East Coast, we had a record breaking 58" of snow..Filled with poweroutages, lack of snow plows, salt trucks, overwhelmed electric companies ect

Unnfortunately, the hot water bottles, and battery powered air stones wernt enough for a 36hr power outage, and unnfortunately, I've lost large numbers of my colonies. I'll be filing an insurance claim, and will need to prove the value per Polyp of my colonies. Where's the best website that can provide such info? ie. Color Morph/Name, price per polyp ect?

Wish me luck, I've taken extra precautions to ensure I don't loose the rest. Multiple WC's, dosing Vit C, and supplemental feedings. Luckily the tank is back on track, but as time progresses, you really see which colonies are fading, after the initial shock of such a large temp change...Tank got down to 60's....

Any suggestions as to where I can find such info?
i'm open to PM suggestions as well

I had a tank crash back in July 2009 due to a 3 day power outage from a storm. Called insurance company and unfortnatly pets/livestock are not covered, but tank and equipment are. Your insurance policy may be different then mine, but I have a felling unless you took out a special policy they will not be covered. I also asked broker if I could pick up a policy on animals but again thru Farmbureu they have no setch policy unless I own a farm with cattle or such.

Ohh, and sence my tank crash the only "insurance" I found was to buy a generator for back up. Small price to pay compared to some equipment in this hobby to protect my reef.

When I went through a multi day power outage and lost everything, they told me only aquarium equipment would be coverd no live stock. Sorry for the loss... watching your tank die is a hard thing to go through.

there just isn't a homeowners policy in existence that covers live animals. it's one of the first things you learn about homeowners when you get your property and casualty license. as firebirdcrzy said, the tank and equipment would be covered but not the contents.

I am a insurance adjuster and I can tell you for sure without a doubt you will not be covered on the livestock unless there is some kind of rider you put on your policy (don't know of any) or you have a commercial policy as a business.

I am truly sorry for your loss and understand fully how you feel, I am not trying to be rude or anything but when you file a claim whether they are valid or not they go against you and your rate. If someone breaks into your home and you file another claim then you are considered high risk and your policy will cost more. Just trying to help

Well everyone, I truly appreciate the help and guidance, It was all wishful thinking! I guess I'll use the money I lost in groceries to put towards my tank. Mike, your valid and informative input was greatly appreciated..I wish you all and your reef's the best.

I guess I'll take some before and after shots!

Thanks again guys!

I checked with my company (Nationwide) on several occasions and there is no such coverage available.... Hence I now use the Vortech battery back up....

Sorry about you loss, its a gut wrenching process to watch something you care about go down with no hope to save it. As already said, keep your eyes open for a small generator. A alot of folks bought them because of the snow( I am in Md also) and will be trying to get rid of them later in the spring. You would be suprised how many folks bought them and tried to return them to Lowes after the power came back on. Most still had gas in them and used the 30 day return policy to get money back, or store credit.

Traveler's homeowners, same thing. Equipment yes, livestock no. On a similar, but not quite on topic comment: I did get a rider for extra water damage that may be caused by a tank leak/burst. They classified it as a sump or water backup coverage or something of the like.

I fell your pain, lost power for 48 hours and lost around half of our corals and a few fish. The best "insurance" you can get is a generator and back up batteries for water movement. You can get a good generator for around $400 which I think is worth it.

This is why I got a generator set up and wired in all I have to do is go out to the service panel flip 2 switches and start the generator. when power is restored flip 2 switches and I am back on main line.

Look into having them replace your "decorative coral" As long as you don't classify it as a living being/animals etc and it is decorative only. Try that! I had a friend who lost everything in a fire, including tank and corals, and he got everything paid for by claiming it was decorative coral, and didn't mention anything about living and they didn't think twice about paying for it. Worth a shot maybe?
