Interesting Solaris Info

I received this article in a newsletter that my LFS sends out. I had similar problems with the Solaris I purchased and returned for a full refund. I edited out the names and company names in the letter.

Newsletter:
"If you were considering one of PFO Lighting’s
Solaris LED fixtures, we wanted to share our
personal experience with this system. First, the
fixtures operate with very little heat into the
aquarium. Corals that have been acclimated to
the intense LED lighting seem to respond well
and thrive under the Solaris. The ability to adjust
the color spectrum, light cycles and other custom
features is an excellent idea. BUT, there is the
down side and it’s a big one! We installed two of
the 48” Solaris fixtures on a custom aquarium in
the last quarter of 2008. For a short time, the
fixtures operated beautifully but then the
problems began. The LED strips randomly began
to flicker and fail. Some would light up fully
while others either flickered or dimmed
unexplainably. Initially, PFO Lighting was
helpful by sending replacement LED strips that
we installed in place of the defective strips. Yet,
weeks later, more LED strips (some that had
already been replaced) failed or began to flicker.
After several visits to the customers home to
replace defective strips (at no charge to our
customer) I (#####) felt this was not fixing the
problem with these fixtures. Once again, PFO
Lighting responded by sending replacement
control panels at no charge that we (######)
installed in both fixtures along with more
replacement LED strips that had failed. Their
response was that fixtures that were
manufactured in China (imagine that) were
having problems (imagine THAT) and the new
control panels would fix the problem.

Just after installing the fixtures in the custom
aquarium we spoke about above (before the
problems started) we (#####) also purchased
one of these 48” LED Solaris fixtures. The same
problems have occurred with this fixture to a
point where we have robbed nearly all the
functioning LED strips to replace bad ones in our
customer’s two fixtures. The control board has
also been replaced in this fixture. J### #### of
####### (a local aquarium service and
installation company) also purchased a Solaris
fixture for one of his custom jobs. The same
issues have arisen in this fixture. Another
aquarium store in the Charleston area installed
one of these fixtures over one of their custom
jobs with the same results! For both J#### and
our competitor’s fixtures, PFO Lighting has sent
out replacement parts just as with the other
fixtures we installed. But now, PFO Lighting will
not answer any phone calls or emails from me or
from Mr. S### (or from requests from our
customer). The fixtures are all still having issues
with flickering or burned out LED strips. These
are EXPENSIVE fixtures still in full warranty
yet PFO Lighting is not responding to requests to
replace any of them. In fact, no one even answers
the phone at the company.
For the obvious reasons listed here, #####
##### feels these fixtures are unreliable and
the support from the manufacturer has degraded
to a point of customer neglect. For us and our
customers that have purchased these fixtures
already, it looks like legal means may be
required to settle these problems. As for you, the
customer considering the Solaris LED system,
we will let you decide whether you want to take
the risk by purchasing one of these fixtures from
PFO Lighting or one of the many other outlets
offering these fixtures for sale. We give PFO
Lightings LED fixtures a BIG THUMBS
DOWN FOR RELIABILITY AND
CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Consider yourself
warned…."

Wow. Though not surprising. I understand that for the I5 they entirely redesigned their power supply and controller boards. If that's the case why would they believe just replacing LED boards in what is obviously an unsuitable design would have a different outcome? Too bad. I'll bet tjhe person who made the brilliant decision to have those initial fixtures manufactured in China is sucking bathwater about now.

I can't beleive this suprises anyone, you can't stay in buisness fixing constantly unreliable products under warranty.

The American built ones are having troubles too, maybe less issues but they just came out.

personally I think PFO is getting out of the AQUARIUM business.
it all started a few years back when they stopped selling there PFO MH lamps [made by VENTURE]. now they only sell these LED fixtures which seem to be total crap!!! I think they'll just call it a day very soon because they'll have to refund everyone on these.
I don't think the technolgy is there yet for these systems. the warm ,humid, salty conditions of our tanks might be just to hard on these combined with the crappy components. some people are gonna get hosed here.
same reason I haven't bought a VORTEC yet. I'll wait till all the ''bugs'' are worked out;)

Not to get off topic, but I think the Vortec's are a reliable product and the customer service IMO is top notch. I wouldn't compare EcotechMarine to PFO.

This will be a sad day for the hobby if Solaris is out of biz. I sure had my share of problems with my unit, but if Solaris goes out I think this technology will be stalled for at least a couple of years. When I purchase a new product like this, one of the reasons I do it is because I accept the risk but want to be a part of advancing the hobby. It is the same reason I went cone and vortech.

I'm not dissing ECOTEC on there product or service, just stating I'll wait personally before buying them once I see less reports on there forum. the best customer service is one you don't have too use. much..but I don't want to sidetrack here.

Well, as you can see there are tons of threads about PFO in the past few weeks. I have 2 friends in the same situation, calls go unanswered, even to accounting and the receptionist. Patrick was on the site late last week, maybe a mod can check the last login date for PFO lighting. he hasn't posted in a thread since 2007, and forget PM's, as they go unanswered as well.

That is no way to treat customers and out of all the people that I ever dealt with in the aquarium dry good business this is a shock cause everyone else that I dealt with tunze euroreef even the people over aquahub have been real helpful and replaced parts at no cost. I guess they deserve what is coming to them wither through lawsuits or there business failing

the sad thing is, when I HAD my solaris H series, and had issues with power supplies, they were great. I had one of the first H series runs, and they actually sent me a new one, so I could send them the bad one back. I sold it on Ebay in september for 1000 bux, and now the buyer is having issues with power supplies. he had been calling and calling but only talked to carla once. my other friend had a G series used, that he then upgraded to an I. he's got LED strips out. I agree, all of them are under warranty, so something has to be done.

+1 many times over. EcotechMarine is one of the best customer service companies imo.

ok, well now their phone system goes right back to the auto attendant.... and when you start typeing extensions they all go to patrick.

Souns like PFO is toast. Maybe AI will step-up now. From everything I've heard the AI has always been a much better fixture.

PFO is a huge company though...

wont be just solaris going away, wont be long before a lawsuits pop up. PFO will likely go bankrupt if they can no longer support the warrenty.

wont help anyone that paid 2grand for the light though.

PFO Solaris H4

PFO Solaris H4

Any word yet on whether PFO is still in business? They took my 100 dollar deposit on a new power supply two weeks ago and I can't get anyone to call me back since then and nothing sent yet. I wonder what all of us can do that have lights under warranty?

On a good source PFO is not out of biz, but Tom who to my knowledge basically ran the Solaris division has quit.

I'm not sure what this will mean for PFO. Keep in mind that this is a tough economy right now, and lots of people are losing jobs and companies are cutting back. Not a good time to be selling multi-thousand dollar lights.

The Solaris was badly engineered from the start, US or china made. The H I had was a pos. They dont know what they are doing, even the MH fixture they sent me to replace the solaris was broke in shipping....the rivets popped out.

They can still make lighting for their other customers, who really are not too concerned with quality but with growing plants.;) ;)
