The Northeast Council of Aquarium Societies is holding their 31st Annual Convention April 7-9, 2006 and is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the NEC! In addition to a full lineup of freshwater tropical fish seminars, they will have two reef speakers, Larry Jackson (speaking 10:45am Saturday) and Bob Goemans (1:15pm Saturday) present programs on reefkeeping (see below) and the Connecticut Area Reef Society (CTARS) will host a meeting and Frag Swap (3pm Saturday) at the convention as well. The CTARS meeting is free to everyone, and the speakers can be seen for a $28 charge, which covers all the other convention speakers on Saturday also. Please visit our website (www.northeastcouncil.org) for registration information, speaker lineup, full schedules, etc. We hope you will take advantage of this convention, held in the central northeast area of Hartford, CT!

Larry Jackson
Larry has been keeping aquatic environments since 1958 and began the long journey of learning how to keep a reef aquarium in 1990. He currently maintains a 200-gallon hard coral reef tank, a 125-gallon soft coral reef tank, and a 10-tank coral propagation system. Larry is an avid scuba diver and underwater photographer and is a member of the International Society for Reef Studies. He has completed dives all over the Caribbean, Mexico, Florida Keys, Great Barrier Reef, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the Philippines, to name just a few. The beautiful underwater photography Larry is known for was featured at a sponsored art show at the former San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and was displayed in their Childrenââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s Art Museum for the summer of 2004.
Larry enjoys sharing his experiences and has made presentations on a variety of subjects to aquarium clubs and conventions all over the US, including several MACNA conventions and the 24th NEC Convention, as well as public schools, universities and civic groups.
At MACNA XII, (Ft. Lauderdale, 2000), he was presented an award by the Marine Aquarium Societies of North America ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œFor Outstanding Contributions to the Marine Aquarium Hobbyââ"šÂ¬Ã‚. He shares his successes, failures, and insight in hopes of making marine aquarium keeping more enjoyable for those who can benefit from what he has learned. His diving experiences have had a considerable impact on his reef keeping philosophy, and his program Saturday should prove to be beautiful as well as informative!

Bob Goemans
Bob has been in the aquarium hobby for over sixty years and set up his first marine aquarium in 1956. As a member of the Jamaica, New York Aquarium Society he was the first in the USA to own and use an undergravel filter and has collected some of his own aquarium specimens from the Caribbean to the South China Sea.

He became a well-known author when writing for Marine Fish Monthly for over fourteen years and presently has monthly columns and/or various articles in Freshwater And Marine Aquariums, Tropical Fish Hobbyist, and Practical Fishkeeping and Marine World in the U.K. and has authored several books on aquarium husbandry. Heââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s an independent aquarium supporter often appearing at aquarium shop openings, question and answer sessions, aquarium society meetings, symposiums, school events and even on TV and has established one of the most popular marine aquarist websites in the world.

Bob has a doctorate in Business Management and is a retired Environmental Contracting Manager for a subsidiary of General Motors. In addition to his aquarium research and writing endeavors, he heads aquarium and environmental consulting businesses, and is a Sierra Club member.
