Every time i go away for a few days i lose sps corals that were fine before i left:mad:
1-1/2 months ago i left for 4 days lost 3 fish and 4 sps frags/colonys.i think i know why this happened-asm skimmer-large star fish in my sump-very short power outage-drained sump
even though the sump was down the tunze's kept the water moving and temps were the same.so i think lack of oxgen at some point.

Now i'm aquirering a new house in another state so i left for 4 days last week tank ran smooth, but once again 4 sps rtn and a few show stn. paramiters are all fine and now that i'm back the tank is improving, but i've done nothing but my normal water change.

Now i will be leaving for another 4 days in a week and i exspect to lose more.
I just cant help but wonder why this happens when my home sits empty for a few days.Change in air or something causing the PH to plumit.??

Those are just a few examples that are recent.but every time i leave corals die:(

I have noticed something similar...being a victim of Murphy several times myself.
All my problems come from equipment failure that could have been easily remedied if I would have been there.
I am never am. :(

I feel for you.

Heh thanks, but your last one was a whole chain of bad events:(

Mine problem is even if the tank runs smooth the whole time gone, corals still die.i just think there has to be a connection to the house being empty and nobody here.Next week me and family will leave again, and i know corals will die, they always do when i'm gone for atleast 4 days. But this time when i get back the first thing i will do is test ph just so can rule it out..

How is your tank doing now?running smooth again i hope. After 7 yrs reef and 20yrs of fresh water.i like to think i've seen most senerios.but what happened to you would have tested me big time, and i dont give up easy:D

Do you think my PH thoughts hold any merit?ive got a alot of 4 day trips coming up before the tank is finaly moved to the new house.by that time all my sps will be dead if the current trend holds true.and to think i was worried about them surviving the move:(

Hey Rob,
My tank is doing great now, I just need to stock it back up.
Hopefully, that will take place within the next month or so.
I guess if you leave home and turn off all forms of ventilation in your house your pH could change.

Do you shut off your HVAC system when you leave?

Thats very good to hear.
Where i live now it is sealed up pretty good and the heat is left at 70 always even though its rarly on,(tanks heats the place all winter:) ) After thinking more about it, these events seem to only happen during the winter.last winter i had some losses as well being gone for week here and there. But no losses during the summer at all, atleast while being gone anyway.

You may be on to something with the pH theory...then again you may not. :D
I remember reading every so often how some reefers have to open a window near their tanks or run tubing to a window to raise their pH.

Too bad they don't make pH meters that record high and low pH (cheaply) like digital thermometers do.

Do you have a window near your tank you could crack a tad when you are gone?
