is this a good deal?

What kind of tank are you trying to set up? What kind of coral if any are you planning on having. What size tank are you going to have? You can have a 36" 30 gal to a 36" 65 gal (all-glass)

you need an end result before you can pick what lighting you need. That light might be too little for very high coral. Ok for other coral and way too much for other coral. So basically the lighting needs is related to what you want to keep in your tank. I hope this helps.

Oh that's real nice.....no ballast. What is even more odd is that they have prices add on's for this and that. but not the ballast that will actually make the light work.

Yeah, I would avoid it like the plague, just doesn't sound right. I would call them though and tell them what the frick is going on. I personally think that they are trying to undersell others by "under equiping" their product.

I've come to find out that in this hobby, like most parts of life, you get what you pay for. If you're going to throw 400 into lights, it's better to wait a little bit and kick in an extra hundred or two to get a reliable system.

That's not to say lights need to be that expensive, but, i'd rather see someone throw more money into a coralife system than that one. I don't think i spent more than 300 for my set-up, but, then again, i have a retro system with just mh.

FYI- I called them just to see how much it would cost.(hey, I am at work. what else do I have to do) They said you can add the ballast for an extra $75. so now your light is $575
