Is this a good deal.

That kit doesn't come with a macro lens. The Tamron is a cheap telephoto rather than a macro lens since the maximum magnification is 1:2. You are correct that a macro lens is around $500 but those are a real macro lens where as the Tamron isn't.

I own that lens, with a Pentax mount. It isn't a terrible lens, but the macro isn't a true 1:1 macro, it is a 1:2. If you stop down the lens to f8 or so it does okay for sharpness, however it suffers from a lot of purple fringing in high contrast areas. The lens was free after I used gift cards for amazon.com. I purchased a sigma 70mm macro, true 1:1 macro. It is very sharp and a wonderful lens, I only wish I would have opted for the 105mm one to have some more distance available between the lens and subject. If I were you, I would buy the XSi and then either the Canon 100mm macro, Tamron 90mm, or Sigma 105mm. It is always cheaper to purchase the right thing the first time!

Thanks for your help. I thought that was a little too good to be true. Like I said I'm new to this stuff and I really appreciate the help! Thanks for the lens suggestions too.

I think i saw that same kit yesterday at Costco, but instead of a Tamron it came with another Canon lens. i believe it was the same price as well.
