Is this a good or bad price??

I came across it seems a rarity in the aquarium trade. I found a mated pair of Amphiprion akindynos or also known as Akindynos Clown AUSTRALIA. The lfs is asking 225. Is that a good price for a large pair of clowns? The female is about 5" and the male is close to 4". Here are some pics.

Tell me what everone thinks. I am thinking of selling my mated pair of clarkii's and ocellaris to get these.

Yep local. About twenty minutes from the house. So what does everyone think about this pair? Like I said I would have to sell my other two mated pairs of clowns (clarkii and ocellaris).
 
i think you should keep your clarkii and ocelllaris since you already had them for a while. these new ones look wild caught, and 225 is a lot for wild caught clowns. now if they were tank raised, then that would be a steal!
 
From what I have read these are one the hardest to find clownfish. Yes they are wild caught. I was told that by the lfs. I always wanted a pair of rare clowns in my tank instead of the easily aquired clownfish. I would love to setup a breeding station for one particular species of fish.

The only way that anything can happen is if my daughter would say its okay. The ocellaris is hers.
 
I want to but have to convince my daughter to let go of the ocellaris clowns. The clarkii's I don't have problem selling or trading in but the ocellaris is up to her. I have to see what she says tomorrow.
So does this price sound fair or is it to high?
 
Well I cant say since I live in Australia.
Mate theres hundreds of better and rarer looking clownfish than that. Why don't you get a rare skunk or some thing. That clowns pretty sick but its up to and what you like.
 
A good deal is all relative. If you really like them and are willing to pay the price, it's a good deal. Just because someone else can get a better deal, doesn't make it a bad one for you.

I personally wouldn't pay that much for a fish no matter what it was, but there are a lot of people who do, and well it's their money. :D
 
Like dc said, if you like them, buy them. You probably wont find another pair like that locally for quite awhile, but they are available online frequently at about half that price.

Btw, thanks for the pics, you've saved me the trip. Those guys get some nice clowns in and I wanted to head down to check them out. Don't worry, I already have a pair. ;)

Just curious, why do you have to sell both pairs to get one?

Because both pairs are in my 75 gal tank. Yes those clowns are semi aggressive. And since they are almost full grown, they would be a handfull with two other pairs of clowns. Reef rico, I guess I should have said that they are very hard to find in the states. I come across skunk clowns very often. Criccio, do you come across a mated pair online? A couple sites that I came across sell fro 200 plus shipping. And they don't offer an arrive alive garuantee. Also since you stated that you have a pair already, can you post pics of yours and what tank mates you have with them.
The lfs has had them now for about 3 or 4 weeks now. I could keep the clowns I have now but I would have to sell my 1/8th scale gas rc truggy to finance another tank. The truggy is my avatar. And not quite sure if I want to do that yet.
 
I'm getting in here a little late. First of all I wouldn't consider Akindynos rare. Pairs come in once a month to the wholesalers. They don't get many because they are not big sellers. (Most people don't see the beauty in big, brown and white clowns.)

They wouldn't have cost your LFS any more than a pair of maroons, so I would say the price is a little steep. Since they are wild caught, they probably weren't a breeding pair, just two fish put together in the collectors tanks.

If they are something you think are beautiful, have always wanted and don't mind the price, get them. If you are buying them because you think they are rare, when the newness wears off you will have a pair of big brown clowns and wonder why you ever got rid of your pretty ocellaris.
 
I like the fish that is not the norm to some people. I have been watching these fish for the last few weeks, and I would have to say they are paired. The male doesn't leave the female's side. i have only come across one site that offers these, and they state them as rare. Is there other sites that offer them? I haven't come across them yet. Also if I am not mistaken, people pay lot more for the off color variants of ocellaris and percs. And these are large clownfish, 4"-5".
So is there another site besides this one that offer these. This is the only pair I have since I started this hobby.marinecenter.com
