Is this a ocelaris or a percula

The eyes are the quickest and likely the most reliable method for telling an A. percula from a A. ocellaris. The spines are not reliable at all, do to the overlap and common malformation/development, especially in small/yound fish.

But the eyes, should NOT be the sole reason to make an ID. The overall look of the fish, the coloration, body posture, fin shapes, etc, etc should all suuport the quick ID based on the eyes.

I have to completely disagree. The eye coloration is so variable (far more than dorsal spines, IME)--the same species can exhibit eye differences in many phases of their lives, even changing back and forth. While dorsal spines (in combination with overall coloration) will vary as I posted above, it is not nearly as variable and unreliable as eye color.

Now I'm more confused than before I posted... sigh. Oh well, it's a clown nonetheless and that's what is important to me.

if your clowns anything like mine, hes well worth it. i got a supposed true perc from the lfs, too. its in my tank with a firefish and a small tang. the firefish doesn't do much and the tang dives behind the rocks when anyone gets near the tank, where the clown goes nuts and stays in full view. i dont know if hes a perc or not, but he was worth every penny. ton of personality
