Is this an algae on coral structure, or the coral?

This chalice coral seems to have a green streak in it that isn't like the rest. It almost looks invasive and like it lives on the skeleton of the coral itself. Should that section be removed? Is it ok? May be just part of the coral but I don't think so.

After more searching, I discovered this older thread, which seems to describe what's happening to this coral. It's slowly bleaching and being invaded by the green (I've only had it a short time so haven't been able to truly witness it in action, but I suspect it's already lost some red color since I got it)

I think my only option is to try to frag it and see if we can find a piece that doesn't have the algae in the skeleton yet.

It certainly doesn't like something, or someone is picking or stinging him.
How long have you had this piece?
How long has the tank been up and running?
What your numbers on ALK,CA and MG?
Lighting? What you use?

Fix the reason for the recede, and he will grow back nicely.

We just brought it home about a week ago, it was already like this. I may continue to monitor it and see if it gets better.

The coral is dying and the tissue is receding. The green you see is algae growing on the skeleton.

You may be able to save it. Check all your params, light and flow levels and consider targeted feeding.
