Is this brace needed?

Wanting to fit a 40b sump but none of the doors on my stand are big enough to fit it in. Stand is built of 2x4 doubled up on the corners. It's a 4ft 120g, do i need the center 2x4 brace in the back? If not i can remove it and fit the 40b.

Well..

Yes you do need support there or put a 2x6 or double up the 2x4 across the whole back with jack studs under them..
that 2x needs a jack next to it directly under the 2x the tank is sitting on... you are depending on the screws only to hold the middle from sagging..

OK.. Where to start..

Some very bad framing .

There is no Structure on any of those joist the tank is sitting on.. The 4 outside corners are Correct from what i can see.. The top surface is what bothers me the most...

that one stud is the least of the Concerns above..

1. you are relying to much on screws
2. The load of the tank needs to be distributed to the floor .

The design of these stands should be as followed

a 2x4 deck with joist sitting on 2x4 jack studs to the lower deck that sits on the floor.. In several places you have 2x4 studs passing inside of the deck using screws as your structure.. You can do this with 1/4 inch or bigger thru bolts but not screws.. I do not think a 4 ft long tank needs middle braces.. but because your tank is sitting on the joist and not the band you need to put plywood on top the stand and center this tank.. and fix the above..

Sorry but i do not find this stand design structural sound ..

Erica.. That is 100% the rocketengineer stand shown commonly around here..
Its more than sufficient and more than structurally sound.. I'd park my Jeep on it..
Maybe the pictures fooled you but its this.

and yes Brando.. you can remove that center brace permanently..

yes my concern is the middle of the back of the tank is not setting on the Ledger if the screws rust or fail the middle of the tank will sag...

I did re post after looking again that the corners are Sound... At first i was thinking the whole stand was built without jacks..

and yes the Rocket eng stand is SUPER SOLID... I would just put a jack under that middle support or plywood on top ...

LOOKING at his last picture is where I am getting this from...

The stand is framed like the picture mcgyver posted.

This is the top. The tank is shifted forward right now. It sits 2" to the rear when in place.

This is the bottom.

In my pictures the tank is pulled forward. When in place, the back brace sits directly on top of the rear joist.

I believe the picture in post #5 is showing that the brace in question has been removed and they pulled the tank forward temporarily some to show that for the picture.. I assume it will be pushed back to sit properly on the frame.

edit:yep.. my suspicions were correct..

Correct. I had to pull the tank forward to remove the middle brace.

How the tank is sitting in the picture in question.
