Is this Doryrhamphus excisus -male ?

Yesterday i bought one more Doryrhamphus , which is shown on the picture bellow.

Is this Doryrhamphus excisus -male ?

Yes, definitely a male D. excisus/melanopleura (both scientific names mean D. excisus excisus).

Of course it might also be a subspecies of D. excisus (D. excisus paulus or D. excisus abbreviatus) but I think that doesn't matter ;)

I agree with the ID, but I'm not the best at pipefish.
 
Hi Todd,

Males have some kind of "spikey" (sorry, don't know how to describe in English) at their snout.
Females does not have those, their snouts are flat.

You can see this very well on Bojan's pic.

Is this true with all/most pipefish, or just this species?

Just this species.

Males of all (or at least the most) species could be identified by the brood-pouch under their belly. But that is pretty hard with juveniles.
And you must have the chance to have a look at their belly ;)
