Is this for real?

yes tank reared is different then being tank bred and raised.

when they are tank reared it means they are captured just after meta, while they are still very small. then they are raised in captivity until they are appropriate market size.

hmm interesting, I guess I never thought about that. So why aren't more fish raised this way? If it can be done with Yellow Tangs, why not with more Tang species.

Also, if they are fry captured from the ocean, is "Tank Rasied" more ethical, or has less impact on the ocean?

tank raised is more ethical if you look at like this,

instead of going out and catching all the market sized/breeder sized fish you catch the fry who are a long way to breeding. most of them will never make it to breeding size anyway due to the food chain and whatever other effects. so now instead of depleteing the breeding population of them you are taking the fry leaving the breeding stock to produce yet another year. replenishing what was taken.

and obviously not all fry are taken, so some do make it on and become the future broodstock.

to my knowledge it is being done with other species as well, however it will take a while for them to be available to the market.
