Is this sand still ok to use?

I am mid upgrade from a 33 long to a 75 with a 40 gallon sump. The 33 has 1.5" of fine sand that has been sitting now just barely covered with water in my garage for about 3 weeks. Is this sand safe to use as is for my fuge or should I sterilize it first?

it'll be ok, as long as you havent contaminated the sand from other sources in your garage (eg motor oil, washer fluid, etc). Just make sure to wash the sand with FW well. Maybe even run it through some vinegar.

If you feel it might be contaiminated Id buy a new batch of sand...no point taking a risk on a new reef.

i wouldnt use vinegar, it breaks down calcium. it would probably turn the sand to mush. some hot water will do fine to sterilize it.
