Hello everyone, I got this shroom about a month ago, and it has been looking like this since a couple weeks after i got it. It always has that fold on it, in the same area. Is it getting ready to split? Is there anything i can do to help it along if it is? I heard some people just split them down the middle with razors? any info will help! thanks

That is a green Florida Ricordia. They can look a little folded and not be splitting. With mine they grow another mouth and then stretch apart. You can split them in two giving a piece of the mouth to each side but if you have never done it before i would wait and do it on a regular shroom that you don't like as much. It's not hard to do but they slime alot when you cut them and the first time is gross.

thanks for the info Laura... if i wanted to split it... after splitting it, should i let it sit in a separate container of saltwater before putting it back into the tank? is that slime hazardous to the other corals in the tank??

hey, i was just looking at some of my fuzzy mushrooms, and i saw something come out of the mouth! the mouths are open really wide right now, and something squeezed out from the inside, and then was carried off by the water until i lost sight of it behind some rocks. It was a fuzzy little blob about the same color as the mushrooms... whats the deal?

That would be mushroom poop.. really!!

If you want to split it you can do it a couple of ways.
1. Leave it attached to the rock and split it down the middle giving each half a part of the mouth. It will heal and you will have two.

2. you can slice it off the rock then split it in two. Sometimes the blob of flesh left on the rock will also grow a new one. Then you have to make sure the new cut pieces attach to a rock I do this by taking some netting material and rubberbanding it to the rock with the shroom underneath the netting. You don't want the rubberband on the shroom but just around the rock to keep the netting snuggly in place until the shroom attaches.

No you don't have to worry about it polluting the water. But you do need to do the cutting outside of the tank. Mainly because it's a slimey job the shrooms tend to curl up and slime up so it makes it harder to see what your doing. And it's important that each piece gets a part of the mouth.

Yes! That's a very good idea. Pretty much is good measure with any fleshy coral. I just got finnished fragging some Sinularia dura and was glad I did because it's actually juicier than I thought it would be ;)
Ya, so, get a seperate container,in my case I used a bucket as I was following with a waterchange. So I used the water I was replacing to keep the colony/frags in while I cut and mounted. This way, it helps keep your stuff wet and cleaner to work with, and all the slime/terpenes can spread in the container and not contaminate your tank. Let your frags and colony sit for a few minutes so the cuts can coagulate. Then place them in your tank. Another good measure is to follow up with some fresh carbon. Which reminds me...:hmm2:
