I've got T5's should I bother posting in this forum?

I have heard from a few people that you could get away with keeping a monti in there, mostly a Cap. I have a 65 with 4x39 T5's.

Yeah, you can get away with T-5's...and more than just monti's. Here's my 29gal..only 2x24w T-5, and a 55w PC 03 Actinic. To me the corals look good, and are holding their color good. I will be upgrading to a 6x24w T-5 set up soon, and don't have any douts I can keep anything in under that light.

thanks everyone for the input, i will put my first sps in as soon as i find a nice one. Nice tanks everyone, esp that link you sent me brion, no clue what it is saying though.

With a DSB and T-5's! Everyone on this forum should see this picture. I wish my German was a little better so I could figure out what I'm doing wrong?

My camera does not have a manual white balance so that is how the day bulbs turn out. HT pic is from September and almost all the corals have doubled in size.

Brion that is sweet...any idea how many t5's and what size tank?

cmondo...it definitely can be done.

Sounds good, and they are a hell of a lot cheaper than getting halides.

Not really if you do it right. By the time you cover a tank with T-5's, buy 8 or so bulbs, ballasts and individual reflectors the difference might not be as big as you think.

T-5's are a great alternative to MH's now but you need the proper equipment to do it correctly. The cheaper T-5 units with one reflector for all bulbs are basically useless. The individual reflectors boost the output by up to 50%.

i have t5s on my 90g, i am switching to a 180 and it is way cheaper to buy a 2x250 halide setup than it is to upgrade my t5 setup to cover the 6' tank. so the cost isnt an issue anymore for t5s, more of a preference i would say, also add up the cost of replacing say 8-12 or more t5s to cover a 180 compared to replacing a few MH bulbs and the cost difference is nill. check out my little red house for growth shots of T5 lighting and check my sig for my current t5 setup. i am not saying that t5s suck because i really like them and they work awesome, its just that it is not pratical to go t5s, fo me that is, over my new tank

I currently have T5's but when I go to a 120 I will be using 2X250 Metal Halides and using my T5's as supplements. It would cost way too much to run all T5's with all the ballasts/reflectors/bulbs.

how is it not practical when bulbs last much longer and the power bill is less?

I really hate to say it but I think for power consumption you won't see that much of a difference. For example, I will be running 312 watts of light with my T5 and if I ran the other option it was 500w of HQI and 78 watts of T5 (or 578 watts total), the electrical difference per month is, $6.54 per month.

Halide and T5 combo = $17.77
T5's only = $11.23
