Janss pipefish.

I was wondering if anyone had some information on Janss pipefish.

We have 3 at work and they are pretty cool. Very small pipefish. They hang out together and I think they are better in a group of 3. They always hide under a rock though, and on one site, I read they like to keep their tail touching a rock at all times.

They seem to only eat frozen brine and probably snack on pods. What would the chances of them eating mysis be? My boss says mysis is too big.... but I read on a site that had just a few facts on it, that they do eat mysis.

I really would like a smaller speices of pipefish for my 25 gallon but I do not have the pod population up for them to live off brine and pods. Mysis is more nutrious and if I could get them eating that, I wouldn't be so cautious.

Any info or links would be great! Thanks

If they are already eating brine, you should be able to switch them to mysis.

If they really can't eat full size mysis, you can always shave bits off the frozen block.

There have been one or two posts on Jans pipefish in the last year.

You can try the search tool. Its usually not available, but you might get lucky. If that dosn't work, you can do it the hard way and just list all posts and scroll back page by page until you find the posts.

Thanks.

I looked back and found a couple threads on them.

We have 3 in at work and I may buy them a little later down the road if we still have them.

A lot pipes get like 10 inches and I was looking for something around 6-8. So I may have found what I wanted.

keep your eyes out for a product called mini mysis, it's put out by H2O Life. it's not widely available but rumor has it it should be reaching the east coast shortly. if you're familiar with the size of hikari, they're way smaller. i posted some picture comparisons in one of the threads on seahorse.org but the ones seahorsedreams took are easier to find and better pictures (look for the thread "brand of mushy mysis"). saxman reports the janss like them.

Thanks Nano!

My boss said the Janss like to be in groups of 3.... and we have three in. I would hate to only buy (my initial plan) and have the one little guy all alone. But at the same time, thats like 6 fish in a 25 (2 sea horses, 3 pipes, and a goby)... and that is a lot of bio load.

I think I may wait for bandeds, multi bandeds, or dragon face.... you think those would do alright in a 25?

truthfully, don't know. i haven't kept pipes in over 30 years. we used to catch them as kids along with dwarf seahorses.
