JBJ Auto Top Off...What pump to use?

For those of you who are using a JBJ Auto Top Off System, what is the best pump to use for them?

If your reservoir is near the sump then an Aqualifter works great & is only $15.00. Plus it's silent & can run dry.

I used some maxi jets that I had laying around, but I bought an aqua lifter.

The only exception I would suggest is if you intend to run kalk in your ATO. If so the aqualifter will be prone to getting clogged and a small maxijet or rio pump could be better.

Aqualifters dont have a problem with Kalk topoff. Just the opposite which makes them a great kalk topoff pump. I topoff ~ 3G/day fully saturated Kalk. My pumps never clog and are more than 3 years old.

My Aqualifter has been working fine for Kalk top off too.

Just make sure you test your final setup to make sure there is no siphon going either to or from the top off reservoir, when the pump is shutoff.

When I had one on my nano I used an MJ900. Now that I am using it on the display tank and the reservoir is in the basement I use a Mag7

I do about 3G a day as well but must have never figured out how to stop clogging from Kalk in a 20G rubbermaid tub that served as my reservoir. I assume it was from the by-product at the bottom that I didn't bother to clean out frequently. This would happen especially when the water level would be low in the reservoir. The switch to a stronger pump eliminated the problem.

Aqualifter, dosing pumps, solenoid valve, MaxiJets, all work depending on the situation.
