I had one and always had problems with it not turning the pump on. I now use the avast marine unit and couldn't be happier. Check that one out and it's about the same price of the JBJ.
I use the JBJ and have had no issues with it. The only problem I have is that the powerhead gets stuck often when the unit asks for water. Not sure if other people are having this same issue.
I have the same problem with the float valve sticking and either putting too much water in or too little and its frustrating. I have the Tunze ATO on all of my other tanks and never had and issue with it.

I've had that happen several times where the float gets stuck and floods the tank. Not sure why this happens but it does happen to me every so often. Is there another way to send water to the tank without using a pump?
I have had mine for about 18 months and its been trouble free. I use an Eheim Compact 600 pump, I do perform preventive maintenance like I would for other equipment.
I remove the floats from my sump and clean them in vinegar every 5-6 months.
Mine is still going great after almost 4 years now. I've had a minor issue about 3 times total where the float pump in my sump doesn't drop due to salt buildup I'm sure. Pretty sure it's my fault for not ever having cleaned it. It didn't cause any problems though . Just didn't trigger the pump to add water. I'm extremely pleased with it.
