Thinking about adding the jbj viper 70w or 150w to the collection, does anyone have any input?

Also thinking about a pendant to hang from the ceiling. Where can I get just the pendant to put my own retro fit into?

Thanks
Patrick

I have the 70w. I would say it is good for up to 12" deep and about a 12" to 15" cubic area. I have it on my 12g nanocube and it is a nice lamp. If you frequent the Berkeley area, you are welcome to come take a look at it sometime to see if you would want to buy one. pm if interested. I got mine at Blue Zoo Aquatics, very nice people and quick shipping.

I think it really depends on what you want to keep. If you want to do sps and clams only for the whole tank, go with a 150w. If you might want to do some lps or a mixed tank, i'd stick with the 70w.

Also, consider the cooling issues. If your ambient room temperature exceeds 74-75 degrees and you have no chiller, you may have trouble with the 150w and even the 70w depending on how hot it gets in your place.

no trouble with heat with flow and sump, its open top. I want to hang a pendant from the cieling. I already have the retro bulb and ballast but would like to hook it up to a retro pendant. something creative.

I have the 70watt viper over a 9" tall 5g tank that only houses zoanthids and a xenia. They love it, and the heat is fine, even today in mid 70 degree ambient weather.

If you're doing SPS then you definately should get this, but softies etc would do well with them too. Getting the 70watt would allow you to expand a bit later on if you decided to go with SPS.

Ceiling hung pendants are really nice as well, but you'll have to make sure it will be solid in the ceiling. Sometimes the ceiling is just drywall, you have to be lucky and find a joist right where your tank is. It's a bit risky IMO.

yeah finding a stud in a place where i want the tank will be like playing the lotto.

I am still looking for an empty pemdant to put my exsisting 70w mh in.

you could rig a stand for the hanging light, though you might as well get a clamp on...

I remember you were hiding your 2.5g tank in the shelf? Will your 7.5 also be hidden? I"m guessing not =)

You could make a little stand for it, and then encorporate a "hanger" to hang the pendant off of.

Also do a search for Ninjafish, he is using some kind of desklamp as a metal halide.

Yeah I talk subscribe to nijafish and he is the inspiration for the cube. We were talking about that desk light he has and it cost $230. I have a stand for it with a ten gallon sump already but thank you. I am going to figure out some way to hang a light to keep the top open. I would rather use the equipment I have then purchase a brand new pendant. So I am still looking around for a old pendant to put my 70 and ballast into.
