Just bought a 125

nice pick up. once i got my 125g yrssss ago. i loved the length of the tank instantly..

what are your plans for this tank? stock, lights, equipment etc etc?

First, type of corals. Second, allowed fish. Third, number of fish (lots of little ones, or a few big ones).

Admittedly, I'm a little jealous. I'm rather eager for the day I can turn my 40B DT in to a 'fuge or QT, or "worst case" it'll be a sump for a 90 or 125.

this is a good point about the fish size and selection. i went with several small fish to give lots of action and 2 medium size fish and 1 big fish. it gave a great balance and look to my tanks over the yrs following this process...

So I think I pretty much have my tank planned out. I want to break it in to three sections. The first two feet I will have LR and be a softie and active LPS reef. The middle two feet are going to be pretty open(swimming room for bigger fish.) The last two feet will also be aquascaped and be SPS and less active LPS.

Fish: I already have a 55 mixed reef with smaller fish, so for the 125 I am thinking Fox Face, MAYBE a PBT and if not an easier "small tang," a pair of large clowns(probably clarkii.) I will have the usual small gobies and fish that every reef needs. I wish there was a true shoaling fish i could add. If it looks too bare I will probably go with wrasses, reef safe obviously.

Corals: why even start to list them lol, mixed reef.

Substrate: BB, I saw I really cool idea I am going to try out. You lay down a thin layer of sand and then use safe spray paint over it.

Filtration: 150lbs or LR and a Skimmer probably Reef Octo. I am going to try and keep stocking down so I can easily maintain water quality. I dont plan to run any sort of reactor unless WC and skimming cant keep up with the tank.

Sump: I am waiting to see if my spare 55Gal will fit in the stand with enough room to work, if so It will hold any LR I dont use In my aquascape, skimmer, heaters, return pumps.

Flow: more on the SPS/LPS side, less on the Soft/LPS side. This is actually where a question comes up. Is there an advantage to overflow/ return placement? I was going to run both overflows in the center, and the returns in opposite corners to help flow.

Lighting: thinking about stepping in to LEDs to avoid needing to now buy 12 bulbs every 6 months.

So I think I have my stocking list pretty much figured out.

Fox Face
PBT
Pair of Clarkii Clowns
3-4 reef safe wrasses
And some small gobies and maybe a blenny

Just a little advice you might won't to reconsider the Clarkii's I have a spawning pair and they are quite aggressive I can't even put my bare hand in my 125 with out her drawing blood

I would also skip the 55 gal for a sump unless you have a tall stand I have a 55 under my 125 and it is damn near impossible to reach in and clean good I can't even touch the bottom of my sump

what he said^ 40breeder is probably a better bet lower and deeper front to back.

what type of foxface?Depending on the species they get 6.5-12 inches.

1 fox face
1 powder blue tang
1 green clown goby
1 neon goby
and 3 wrasses of your choice. I would personally get 1 Cirrhilabrus flavidorsalis 1 tri colour fairy wrasse and 1 carpenters or filamented flasher wrasse.

Make sure your filteration is adequate :)

Oh,I forgot about the clownfish :/ I wouldn't do clarkiis.I would get a pair of one of the following:

Amphiprion Perideraion
Amphiprion Akalopisos
Amphiprion Ocellaris
or true percula clownfish :)

Larger clownfish like maroons, clarkiis and tomatoes can be very territorial, especially a breeding pair!!!I would do one of the species I listed before,Amphiprion Ocellaris being the most peaceful. You don't want to overstock your tank either. If you were to add a pair of clarkiis which I highly suggest you don't add them a good 3 months or more after your last edition.

Yeah I will just stick with the Picassos then. I know the FoxFace(Lo) and PBT are big guys but do you really think those two and a few wrasses would be close to the limit for a 125? I just feel that it would look bare.

It is really up to you.I personally would rather understock a tank than overstock.Give me 2 or 3 options and I will give you some advice.if you start adding in more fish, which you can you will need to do weekly-fortnightly water changes :)

Yeah I just want a few smaller critters to occupy the reef parts of the tank. Although I am sure they will all decide to go to the same side and leave the other empty lol. Also going BB really cuts back on what gobies I can keep, but this hobby is just full of tradeoffs.

Two things I forgot to mention about the tank. First I will be using Dr. Tims One and Only to see how it works. Second I will be using a 20 gallon QT( hopefully in the stand) for all fish added. I have not QTd in the past and never had a problem, but with a PBT looking very likely I want everyone to be clean.
