I had two more cultured clams shipped from SeaCare last night. This first one is about 5" long and has a wide almost frilly mantle. I love the aqua colour!
This one is almost 6" and is the largest clam I've ever personally seen. It squirted me when I was taking it out of the bag to put it in the tank and I was amazed at how much water it can hold! The mantle is black with mint green markings in a really unusual pattern.
Both clams seemed to have a great first day in the tank. They seem almost overly responsive to the fish and even me when I approach the tank but I suspect this is just because they are new.
And I thought this hobby wass addictive before I got into clams
Well sorted out probably isn't the term I'd use I reduced their numbers drastically by adding two powerheads to the back of the tank. Flatworms really hate high circulation and it was pretty dead back there. I'm still siphoning every week but I've yet to see a flatworm on a coral or clam. They are on the rocks and the sand and I hate the look of them but I'm still not sure I want to use the emergency bottles of Oomed I have stashed away here.
Angel, does Seacare have a website? How do you get a hold of them? Did you get to pick the clams before you ordered them?
Those clams are absolutely stunning! I too have the clam bug with 5 already, but I have been searching for a turquiose colored one for a while.
Flame Angel,
Your clams are very beautifull.Good luck with them.Clams are very addictive and I'm living proof as I've spent lots of cash on them and will spend more and more and more.....
You can pick out your own clam if you are buying one over 4". He has some really nice aqua ones in right now. Your best bet is probably to just email him at tim@seacare.org and ask. I know he does ship clams to the US ocassionally but it's best to contact him to make arrangements.
Tim is really doing something special with SeaCare. His clams are maricultured by natives overseas. They are sending him some really amazing clams that acclimate to our tanks very well. He is also providing a sustainable livlihood for these people.
I don't usually comment on people's pics of corals, fish or inverts cause it's all beautiful but Sacrebleu, those are some fantastic clams. I have never seen one like your second pic, truly amazing!
Get us some more pics from different angles, especially the top.
aquafresh - The black and green clam is pretty special. I'm new to clams and didn't realize it but I've been told it's a fairly rare colouration and pattern.
I'm not equiped to take photos from the top (yet) but I've attached one of the photos that Tim at SeaCare sent me before I purchased it. If you're buying a clam over 4" you get to pick the one you want. He keeps his clams in trays under 400w halides and can take those great from the top pics easily. My two new clams are the ones in the top right of the photo attached.
I'm really impressed with Tim's clams. He shipped them all the way from BC (completely across Canada) and the heating pack was still warm when I got them. I acclimated them in a bag and when I peeked into the bag to check on them after a few minutes they were opening up already. You can't beat cultured clams for easy tank acclimation. He feeds them live phytoplankton too.
Do you have to email or phone Tim to find out what he's got? I find the seacare.org website a bit hard to navigate and find anything useful. When I click on, say, "T. crocea" all I get is a "Suggestions on the care of your T. crocea." It doesn't tell if they have none, or some, or whatever.
Yeah, I think the best thing for now is to just email him if you're interested. Let him know what you're looking for. I believe he does ship internationally too.
