I just spotted pickling lime (kalkwasser) been sold at my local publix again, they only bring this item seasonally so this is your chance to stock up.
The product is located on the back left corner of the store in a display, there is plenty of it, price is $2.39 per 1lb container.

this is the store address

Publix
Weston Lakes Plaza
294 Indian Trace
Weston, FL 33326-4509
Main: (954) 384-4190

Thanks Roger. I just picked up 3lb at the Publix in Deerfield Beach on military trail near 10th. its in aisle 6...

how long does a pound last for you?
andy

well to calculate how long it will last....

Mrs. Wages says that each of her pickling lime containers is 16oz of lime.

Mr. Google says that 16oz = 32 tablespoons

The Internet (generally) says that you use 1 tablespoon to each gallon of RO make-up water you add to your tank.

You should know approximately how many gallons of water you put in your tank each day. Then you need a jar for every 32 gallons you put in your tank.

Hope this helps

with kalkwasser or pickling lime...u don't have to dose anything else right? just add the certain amount to the top off water and that's all right? I think I might start going this route

I want to use this stuff as well! I've heard so many great praises, but not how it works, how much to dose, if it needs to be done in steps, how often...you get the idea. :)

Anyone know where I can find this information? Or has it all been laid out infront of me already? It just seems too darn easy to just add 1 tablespoon to each gallon of top off water and thats it, takes care of everything. Nothing in this hobby is that simple.

If you go this route, what else needs to be supplemented, anything?

Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah, one more question...is there a particular brand thats best? I'm going to check out Publix tomorrow :)

::shrug:: by that formula it makes sense, but that doesn't sound right at all... something in the calculation is wrong. i don't know what it is tho.

sorry just tried to help

I've never really meassure the time it last me, I use it inside a reactor so I think the mixing is easier since all I do is put a whole container every time I see is low.

This is one of the better articles that I 've read regarding kalkwasser

The mistake is that you are confusing Volume and Mass, In reality you will get approx 64 tablespoons out of a quart container.

Ah, thank you wise one. That makes a lot more sense. I just kinda fudged some calculations together that sounded right, but didn't sound like it came out right.

Thanks for the article. I skimmed through most of it and (thanks to my chemistry classes) understood a good portion of it! My concern is how to dose it without getting any of the solids from the bottom into the tank? I planned on hopefully making an ATO using the sun tea jar information that I found on this site (thanks to whomever made that!) if that won't work, I'll buy something that will...but I'd like DIY as its cheaper. :) Any thoughts on this? Using a large garbage can is not feasible. I only have a 26 gal tank/10 gal sump, not a large system by any means.

Thanks again for the article, what great information!

If you want to keep the solids out that settle to the bottom, you can either drill the feed hole further up the container, or just mix it in a different container, let the solids settle, then pour it into the dripping container.

I will give you a few facts for you to figure out how to dose it.

1, once the pickling lime powder is dissolved in water and has saturated the water and made it into Kalkwasser it will not continue dissolving and will settle to the bottom. The clear liquid should have a Ph of 12 or close and will continue with this strengh.

2, it is always better to drip the kalkwasser into a part of uyour aquarium or sump were it will mix quickly.

3, you can reuse the unused settle powder to continue mixing more kalkwasser.

Good luck

Hey in what isle would this be in? I know someone stated isle #6 but isle #6 may not be the same in every publix. Would it be in the spice area??

According to Julian Sprung one can dose a 1/4 of a teaspoon of kalk mixed with water per 65gal every hour .Dripping is not required with this amount.

Mel, In my publix it is at the end of aisle 12 in the back of the store on a freestanding display, if you can't find it in your publix let me know and I will buy some for you
