Just Starting

Hey
I am in the Ithaca area, and am just starting in SW. I have a 55 gallon FW, and am looking to setup a 10 gallon SW nano reef.

First of all, where can i get SW anything in the area (other then Syracuse, Aubrun, Bighamton, Elmira). They are all just far enough, but if i must i will.

But hello, and any advice is more then welcome.

i have looked into the store in the mall. they usually only have one or 2 fish, an anemone, and a couple lbs of live rock. they said they can order some stuff, but dont guarantee it, and i dont know how all the extra transfers in between shipping, the store and my home would be.

it is a last resort for basic needs i guess. I wish there was a LFS like the one where i used to live in Queens, NY. They had about 200 tanks of fish, and thats just between the front entrance and the register. There was still 3/4 more of the store

Other than placing online orders traveling is your best option. it all depends on what you want to keep. nano's are great but can fill fast and your very limited on fish you can keep.

that is perfect, it is the only way to limit me from spending all my money and going belly up

I live in elmira and the tropical fish outlet rarely has anything worth buying.... if you ever make it to the area check out the city zoo. there are also so local reefers here that normally have nice stuff for sale or trade

Maybe we should start a thread with these LFS, since I am going to have to go on a roadtrip around CNY!!!

So if im in elmira ill just visit City Zoo in Elmira

Finnyas is (I believe) still closed up for the guys to finish up the new shop. I forgot when they said they were planning on getting it opened up, but it's only about 20mins at the most from anywhere in Ithaca. All my favorite frags that I have came from there. Other than that, ABC Reefs in Syracuse is not all that much farther from you than Elmira, and that store is one of the best in the area. If you head down to Elmira, City Zoo is the top pick in the immediate area, but TFO may have some stuff. Tropical Fish Emporeum in Auburn really doesn't have anything for corals, but their fish selection is pretty good, and fish are commonly mislabled there (from my experiance), so you can get some SWEET deals from time to time. The last time I went, they were selling a Venustus Dwarf Angel as a Bi-Color Dwarf Angel. Thats about a $120 - $150 fish which was only going for $35!!!!! I didn't even know it when I saw it, but after I got home and saw a picture of a Venustus online I realized what I missed out on.

If you take a trip to Rochester, there is The Reef Shoppe and Caribean Forest. I've never been to either one but I hear they are excellent. Anyways, welcome to the forum! Good luck in your search.
