I think your confused between soft and DOF . Those shots are very sharp with the back being out of focus ( short depth of focus A.K.A . DOF )

Great pics I just got a nikon D50 too and am just learning. I think it is a very good camera for the $.

Thanks for all comments. Actually the last shot was taken with a Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 - kit lens... not a 105mm macro lens.
