Kadavu Live Rock...any good?

I'm going around and around on what kind of Live Rock to order, I've been to every LFS, they all want $6.99 lb for stuff that looks like it's been siiting in the sun for 2 years and was just put in water last week. LFS is out, I'm ordering online.

Pet Solutions can deliver 90 lbs of live rock to my front door overnight for $398. This seems like a really good deal....if Kadavu rock is any good and if Pet Solutions is any good.

What do yall think?
Anybody ever ordered this rock from Pet Solutions?

My poor little post made it to the bottom of page 2 and nobody has replied.

I've done some researching and I think Pet Solutions is just trying to be cute by renaming what they believe to be their best quality Fiji Rock to "Kadavu Rock" Since Kadavu is part of the Fiji islands...isn't it?

It appears to be cured rock because the rest of the rock they sell, they clearly state needs to finish the curing process before being added to the aquarium. The Kadavu says "it is kept hydrated prior to shipping and packed in moist packaging so it will arrive to you in superior condition."

I may just order it, it can't be worse than the ugly dead "live" rock all the LFS are seeling. And it will a little more than half the price...
What to do...what to do....

LFS 90 lbs dead looking Live rock= $629
Kadavu 90 lbs mystery rock= $398 shipped

No experience with Pet Solutions but they sound like a big corporate entity. Only worry with that is how well do you know the source of the live rock. There are laws in the US now preventing harvesting of live rock from active reefs. I don't know about Fiji (Kadavu). Also note that stuff shipped from abroad often is only a few days off the ocean floor. It may arrive looking pristine with lots of interesting hitchhiker critters but many will likely perish (and the rock end up looking like the one from your LFS
in a few weeks). Make darned sure that anything you order "fresh" undergoes several weeks of curing in a holding tank before putting it in your main tank.

I have found luck at the local petcos. There are several stores that actually sell live rock. The price is based on small, medium, or large. The large is usually around 4 lbs and will cost you around 24 bucks. This rock is already cured and I haven't had any problems thus far.

I bought live rock for a little over $3.00 a pound. They shipped it to an airport about 90 miles from here and paid for the shipping. It has been in my tank now for 14 days, and the amononia, trites and trates are all coming down. It came from intmarinefish.com---check with them

Hi All,

I'm actually the live deliveries manager at Petsolutions, so the rock and the other live things on the site are actually my responsibility. This is my personal Reef Central account, I believe I can shed some light on the Kadavu rock for you and give you a better feel for our company. I hope the info I provide helps, but if you need more info then please feel free to give me a call. My name is John.

We call it Kadavu, because we wanted to be specific with the area the rock is being collected from for those who want very detailed information on their rock. There is a difference in this rock vs. the normal Fiji rock from our company and from other companies I've seen in the last 20 or so years. The Kadavu rock is lighter weight and more porous than the normal Fiji rock is, and this difference is usually very noticeable. This type of rock has been my favorite to build with and I've built with quite a few types, and I'm the one who was responsible for putting Kdavu up on our site.

As for the curing, it will need to be cured, and I would consider it to be semi cured just like the rest of our rock. Even when tanked, there is no guarantee that the rock will be cured when it is shipped out, so you're probably going to see the usual ammonia spikes and such you see with other live rock. I will adjust our description of this rock to reflect that and be more clear, thank you for pointing that out.

The Kadavu rock actually ships from my building, so I can get my eyes and hands on the rock easily if need be. If you want to pick up a couple of boxes of Kadavu from us for the order of 90lbs you mentioned then please feel free to include a note on your order when you place it directed to me (my name is John) and let me know if you want larger or smaller pieces, or a mix of larger and smaller both. If you give me a note like that, I'll make sure it is done. Another bit of information for you is that when we sell a 45# box of rock it really is 45 pounds of rock. The boxes go out at about 50 pounds, to allow for any grinding during shipping that occurs.

A bit of info about us and about me:
As far as our company goes, we have 50+ years in the industry as a retailer and we are a family owned and operated business located just outside of Dayton Ohio. I'm not in the owner family, and I've been here about three years as the Live Deliveries Manager. I've been in the industry professionally for 13 years and in the hobby longer. We are a good size company, but not some sort of giant supermegamart type company. I was actually a Petsolutions customer before I started working here. We have the ability to add personal touches to most orders, and I've even done things like create notes to put inside of fish boxes going out that say things like "Happy Father's Day" or "Happy Birthday" at the request of my customers. I care a lot about my customers and their orders as well as the living things shipping out, and while I may not be perfect (who is?) I will guarantee you that we will give you our absolute best effort when working with you on an order.

I hope that helps. Feel free to drop me an email from our website, or give me a call if I can be of any further help.

I have to say I love petsolutions.com i have ordered so much stuff from them. Although i think they waste alot of money on extra packaging and Im a nut for being a clean environment. But I love them, they have always been great. I know my ups drivers name because I order from them so much.

I have ordered live stock twice and have been very please both times.

I was actually thinking about the Kudavu rock for my 75g thats in the works. Im doing some research before I choose though. But I do agree that its cheeper to buy it online.

Hope this helps some & good luck with everything ! :)

just so you know that if you have to have it shipped, then you will still need to cure it all overagain.

it is pointless to buy cured LR if your gonna have it shipped.

FWIW,please checkout www.livestockuas.org.

They have a ton of info, and I recieved 100lbs of Vanatu rock last month. Not cheap, but some of the best rock i have seen.

There customer service is great, and i got just what i ordered.

Shipping on the rock( 100lbs) was 68.00 from LA to Denver.Keep in mind this was last month,so the shipping has probably increased.

wow! nice to know :D

I bought some coral from Pet Sol and they sent half of them DOA!! I called and they made good on thier promise of refund but the first call at about 7PM I was told that there were no saltwater people in at this time. When I did get throught to someone with "experience" they told me that sometime coral appear dead just put it in the tank for 30min and see if it looks better!! This thing they sent smelled SOOO BAD I took the picture they required and threw it out. So I don't find them to be the place to buy live stuff from....If you have nothing in the tank though it shouldn't matter that much just longer cycling time I beleive

I've been on the hunt for live rock online as well cause the local stores are just elling just ole fiji brown which is not to much to jump at. So far o've narrowed my search top either Pacific east, liverocknreef, and liveaquaria. Have u guys found anything else?

As others said, you'll have to cure any LR you get delivered. Even cured rock from the LFS may go through a small cycle.

I bought Fiji uncured LR, but it was pretty fresh and my initial cycle was done within about two weeks.

I had the LFS get me two boxes of rock, and they gave me a lower price, because they didn't have to cure it or unpack it. We picked it up from them the day they went to the wholesalers.
