Kalk vs. Calcium

I am somwhat confused about the different methods for adding Calcium to a tank and which is to be used when.

I have a tank that has many types of coral LPS, SPS, Mushrooms, zoas, and many others. I am able to maintain cal levels in the high 400's by using a Reef Builder powdered calcium added a few times a week. What I am not able to understand is if I am able to maintain adequate levels using this method would I have any need for a Kalk reactor or Cal reactor.

Why do some use Kalk reactors and some Cal reactors?

Using SeaChem's two part supplements (dry form) should be enough.

If you tank is packed with SPS and LPS you might want to considered a reactor.

Kalk reactors and Calcium reactors, really cannot raise the Ca or dKH levels without consequences. Calcium reactors depress pH and Kalk reactors increase pH. Both of these can harm a tank by putting too much acid or base into an aquarium, however, using both will balance each other out, therefore allowing a good steady flow of calcium and alkalinity. But really they cannot raise Calcium levels like CaCl2 supplements, which are the ones you use. CaCl2 will raise the calcium levels immediately.

Putting a reactor on your tank will alow you to maintain your levels and as far as keeping it at a specific range, for example 440, you might have to supplement on your own in conjunction with the reactors.

The reactors are good because they will not allow your calcium to fall below 380 ppm speaking generally, but they do have the ability to keep your tank significantly higher, say 480 if dialed in right.
