I just started dosing with kalkwasser used 1/2 a teaspoon in 1 gal of water (with in the recommend dose per the instructions) and My calcium went from 400 ppm to 480 ppm is that to much of a increase in just that short amount of time or is it alright? and those of you that do dose with kalkwasser do you drip or juse it as top off I dripped it last night although thinking about using it as top off if i continue dripping should I use the 1 drip per three second rul or is there something else? thanks

Aaron,

I geenrally mix my Kalk in a 5 gal container with RO/DI water which I then use as my top off. I don't drip, just once or twice top off (anywhere from 1-2 gal). Haven't seen any ill effects and, from what I am reading from Calfo, it is a widely accepted way of doing it.

I think thatis the way I am going to start doing it instead of the drip for many reason still have to top off and with where i have my doser I dont have room for my top off now and it would spread the dosage out a little more then it currently is.

drip it! with time you can adapt fast dumping but if your system is new to kalk dosing go slow for sure! i would drip it and eventually increase then u can dump with no worries for sure.

the reason is new systems have high shifting issues (buffering helps as it increases hardness) and kalk in high dose can create a shift in ph . so just feel it out 4 sure

the tank has been running about a yr now so its not that new its pretty much self supportive I really dont have to do anything to it dont even have to be real religious on WC's (every 2-3 wks:D)

its a 10 gal and actually its been going long then that the last water change I did was because i moved the tank before that it ad been 2 month and nothing ever changes had my water tested at eddies and at union and shows up fine everytime and thats using tap water and all. whens the next time you work dave? ill come over and say hi and bring some water in.

Aaron

ill have to swing in and see you then :) gotta pick up some salt anyway (do you guys carry the 5gal buckets of the IO salt? )

Aaron

Hmm,

I must be doing a lot of un-necessary wqter changes, but I do change weekly, at least 10%.

It may be more than some get away with, but it is still recommended. Even if the tank shows no signs of problems, it is the kind thing to do to your tank inhabitants, I believe.

Thoughts?

I do a water change on all 3 of my tanks weekly... Doing them on time now, will most likely save you trouble with problems down the road IMO...

yeah i know i should do them more and once i get the bigger tank up and running then i will make sure that i am a little more diligent about doing them.

schedules are very imp. but once you have a well aged and established tank you will be surprized how much extra care you make is not neccesary for your tanks health. the aged tank is aged so you can neglect it. but i dont recommend changing your schedule. i find out how far i can neglect by accident. i neglect for a period then think back how well things went. at that point i decide that the continued maintanaces is good but not sooo imp.
again you find out whats imp. if water quality is still good after a month than all a water change does is add ellements and that can be done by dosing. i dont recommend this but i do recognize those euro tanks that havnt had a water change in months and grow sps well is realistic!.

well im upgrading to a 46gal bow front so i am going to try and get back into my normal routin of water changes and stuff being that is alot more water and im sure ill have more fish and all so i really dont want to invest more money just to have it crash cause i thought i could take care of it like I was back with the 10gal again though.
still havent made it over yet dave everytime i think i get a free min something always comes up. are you coming to this months meeting at monti mikes?

Aaron

Hmm,

I am not really sure if I have enough money to really test the water in my tank for quality. I can do fairly unreliable test for Ammonia/ Nitrate/ Nitrate, which, at best, tell me if my tank is in BAD condition. I really am under the impression that more than monthly water changes are needed, and the addition of the minerals as mentioned is also very improtant. Plus, if the larger aquariums and the pros do it, I would think they would save their money if it wasn't necessary?

Again, I am not an expert, only follow the masses so to speak :)

i do dose the tank with the essentials and per the thread title just started with the kalkwasser other then that i dont know if you read the post right or not but i will be doing weekly water changes not monthly on the new tank i was kinda over describing my slack on maintaining my current tank i normally test every day or to and i do keep up on it its not like its some algae growth farm or something i personally think the tank is pretty decent looking corals and everything are doing great and my fish a pretty happy but anyway thanks for the input.

Aaron,

my apology - I was actually reacting to ReefD - i thought he had mentioned water changes not being needed above a 3-4 week schedule. I have been reading everything very fast lately due to lack of time, so, sorry if I misread,

good luck. Oh, I am thinking of making my own continuous feed for Kalk with a little $3 AC motor and a construction similar to what the online reef stores sell - basically the same principal as we use in the hospital for parenteral feeding ( liquid food into IV or Gastro-intestinal tubes). Hopefully, time factor will improve in the next few months.
Look at the pictures of what they sell, if you are interested in DIY, I could explain the principal.
