kati & ani

Has anyone used cation and anion de-ionizer for water changes. It seems to me that you will not waste any water as ro/di for 1gal you waste 3gal. I have both will try on smaller tank to see if there is a difference.

I made a diy cold sterilizer that i used for close to 8 years. Basically it relied heavily on mixed bed resin along side multiple carbon blocks, Poly Bio Marine pads and sediment filter. It was fantastic for everyday use on smaller tanks under 125gl or emergency water changes for fast water up to 2gpm. However i wouldn't recommend it for tanks 125gl and up because the shear volume of water exhausted the resin fast. Recharging 5-7lbs of resin every couple months lost its glamour quickly when i had a big tank. I could have added more/bigger canisters but it seemed like i was just spinning my wheels at that point. Switched over to ro/di for the reef and hooked up the cold steril unit(minus the di canister) to my fridge for drinking water and ice. I do miss that fast fill up sometimes though.

I had used kati & ani years ago when I had discus. It can be annoying to recharge them. I will probably use it for small tanks like you said. Greg

I used to use this method when I first started.
Muriatic acid and caustic lye is NASTY stuff.
I never found a good way to dispose,
and the resins always seem to make a mess.
I found it NOT worth the effort.
