I WANT TO KEEP LARGE # S ALIVE FOR FEEDING TO MY SEA HOSES AND ALSO HOPE TO PROPOGATE THEM IF POSSIBLE I HAVE BEEN USING A 5 GAL BUCKET WITH RO/DI WATER AT 72 ' WITH A SMALL AIR OPERATED FILTER FEEDING SINKING MARINE FISH PELLETS AS FOOD WITH HUGE LOSSES WHAT AM I DOING WRONG

I KNOW THAT THEY ARE RAISED IN FRESH WATER BUT HOW ? THEY SURVIVE FOR A FEW DAYS IN SALT WATER WHEN FED TO THE SEA HORSES AND WHEN GUT LOADED THEY OFFER GOOD NUTRITION. HOWEVER I HAVE HUGE LOSSES WHEN TRYING TO RAISE THEM IN FRESH WATER

well i kept some in my freshwater tank for a while till they were lunch and basically throw in either algae wafers or some sinking pellets and that will feed em...temperature is 74-80 and the ph i had em at was in the 7's. make sure the fresh water tank has been cycled first also

It would be desirable not to use all caps in postings as this constitutes "shouting" FYI.

:)

They are freshwater, but they need brackish for breeding. The babies are raised in brackish and then move to freshwater, IIRC.

.

edit - nevermind.

I see you are trying to just throw water in a bucket and keep shrimp alive. Would you do the same with your fish??

Set up a shrimp tank. 10g is fine. Cycle it. Add some low light plants (mosses are super easy) and driftwood. Put a sponge filter in there.

You won't get babies without brackish, but you'll sustain population better than that rigged up bucket you've got going on
