Killer Mystery Wrasse?

I hope the flames wrasses work out and everyone gets along.

Hopefully, you can find a photo of your mystery wrasse. He sounds awesome. I hope I'll be able to find a Vanuatu one for sale. Where did you get yours by the way.

Thanks!

I paid $150 for my Vanuatu Mystery which was $50 more than the one he had from the Marshall Islands. I got mine from a local dealer who carries alot of high end fish. I took a decent video of my tank yesterday and I will try to get a good picture of the mystery for you this weekend. Actually the male flame has took over the top spot in the wrasse pecking order in my tank. I have a pretty big Lineatus coming next week too though.

Let me check my photobucket and see if I have a good picture. I don't think I have one of a close up of the Mystery. I have a few friends with them and everybody that has a Vanuatu still has their stripes and the 2 that have Marshall Islands lost their stripes with time. I can't say it is a definate thing but the stripes on mine have only gotten brighter with time.

With that being said I added a harem of flame wrasses this past week and the male flame punked the mystery wrasse out. Hopefully I won't ever have any issues but if I do I have other tanks I can move fish too.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Vanuatu vs Marshall Island mystery wrasses in regards to striping. It is very helpful for me. Are there any other differences in coloration that you've noticed.

I would also like to see the pics of your flame wrasse harem. I think I need to have a big wrasse tank now. Haha...I picture my wife's reaction to that.

Thanks!

I got a picture of my mystery even though it not a great one and I have one of my flames. They won't hold still and I don't have a very good camera. I keep spending all my $$$ on fish. I have a big Lineatus coming today. Anyways, you can find Mystery wrasses around here for $100 too but I did pay a little more for the Vanuatu one I have because he was healthy and I had heard the Vanuatu ones stripes don't fade. As I said I have had mine 6 months and the stripes have only gotten brighter. Surely it is no where near full size since it is only about 3" but I am hoping it always keeps its stripes.

Wow. That mystery definitely has prominent white stripes. That flame wrasse is sweet too. Thanks for sharing the photos.

How big is that mystery wrasse by the way? Also, my friend just tried to introduce a nice flasher wrasse with into his 90 gallon. His mystery wrasse who has been there for a couple of months immediately went after him.

My mystery is peaceful with all my fairy wrasses. I recently introduced a flame wrasse and rhomboid and he quickly started to become aggressive to them. He's never done that before so hopefully he does not continue. The thing is every fairy wrasse I have in the tank are either bigger or equal size of him. The flame and rhomboid are a bit smaller.

Heck, my SIX LINE is the meanest and killed about $400 worth of fish already =(

With that many nice and expensive wrasses I sure wouldn't risk it, if it goes bad and it just might, this genus cannot always be trusted, it would be a bummer to have to tear the tank down or deal with dead fish. If he is behaving now that is good but I sure wouldn't expect to remain lucky with new wrasse additions.

Hey Kevin, from the other world :)

You've seen pics of my mystery (Slim), he's huge, mature and he's a model citizen. The borbonias anthias is taking over as the bada** of my tank LOL Slim is never mean to anyone and he's at least 3 years old.... I was a bit concerned about adding the pep hogfish, but the two pay no attention to one another.... As a side note, I never ever notice his white stripes, unless I'm looking for them and I've read (people speculating) about bars being a gender indicator. Who knows LOL

I say do it and see what happens. :) I'm worried about adding Mike's blue sided fairy wrasse though :( But we're going to try it with other, bigger fish, and hope to break up any aggression....
