I'm reusing live rock from a few of my tanks in my new display. One of the tanks has this algae which is similar to hair algae, but quite a bit thicker. The thickness is about halfway between standard hair algae and chaeto. Anyhow, I had a few issues with this rock, hydroids and whatnot as well so I thought I'd kill it all and start over. I left it in a dark closet for a month thinking it would dry out and die out, then I could add it to the new tank and let it all cycle. Well, it seemed dry enough, but it looks like the algae never really died. The algae is still green and once back in water has the same appearance. At least the hydroids are dead.. hopefully.
I really want to kill this stuff before I add it to my new display, but would prefer not to wait days for the standard cooking process. Can I just bake it in the oven for a half hour then scrub it in freshwater? It's going into a new tank, so I don't mind a cycle, and there will be plenty of existing nice live rock going on top from my other tanks. I just want to kill this specific problem algae first.
