Kole Tang W/ possible sand stuck to dorsal fin

E's Reef Tank

New member
Good evening Reefers,
This is my first blog to this site, as i have been in the hobby for years i frequently visit this site with any question i may have. After searching through many forums i was not able to find much guidance for my concern which is why i created my own thread. Anyway, I bought a Yellow Eyed Kole Tang about 1 week ago from a very reliable LFS (LFS, QT their tanks for at least 3 weeks before selling any fish). After QT him i released him in the tank. Maybe 2 days later i noticed what seems to be some very sticky sand flakes on his fin. He eats like a king, shows no signs of illness. I have dealt with numerous tanks/fish in the past with ick, and this does not look like that to me. Just looking to see if anyone else has had the same issue with any of their fish. I spoke to fellow reefers and they have had similar stories when it eventually just falls off. Any comments are appreciated!
--He did seem to have (2) pieces of sand stuck to his bottom fin.. now there is only one..
Thanks
Eric

There is no LFS that properly quarantines; if they run a low level of copper, it can mask certain parasites. The pictures are not definitive and you would not necessarily see visual symptoms.

Steve,
Thanks for the quick reply. If it is a parasite any idea what it might be?
I have been soaking food in garlic and zoe to make sure he is getting his nutrition. I tried to catch him today but it is nearly impossible with the amount of rock i have in the tank.
I have seen the LFS QT set-up too, from what i have seen and heard they do QT better than many of my other LFS.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks again

Better is not good enough. I cannot tell anything from the pictures. Tell me about the fishes behavior. If it is lymphocystis, the selcon will help. Garlic does nothing.

The fishes behavior seems perfectly normal. He is grazing algae off the rocks and eating the nori seaweed and even veggie flake food. He is not scratching or rubbing on any rocks, is not loosing any of his color... Seems perfectly healthy to me. I have heard good things about the selcon, I will grab a bottle of that in the next day or two.

Upon doing some more in depth research it looks like you are on to something with the lymphocytis. I ordered some Selcon and will soak the food in that. I also ordered some virus fighting additives, if the virus looks like it is spreading i will then diagnose with the additives i got. How often do you soak the food with Selcon?
Thanks
