Koralia problems

I was going to order one this week from Foster and Smith, and they were on backorder till the end of the month. They had the #3 on sale for 49.99.

huh , I hope that my new #3 from marine depot is on my front porch when i get home tonight along with lots of other goodies. What is wrong and what should i look out for ?

Supposedly its a voltage leak from the motors not being well sealed. I have 2 #3's and havne't noticed stray voltage from them.

I love the flow I get from these. There's a huge circle of coraline algae around the mount for these just from the backflow alone.

wow. I figured I would get a scend one after I checked one out and for plenty of cross or turbulent current. How do you know if you have a leaker? Loss of putput?

Tomoko! lol, you will know when your GFCI trips or you place a voltmeter between your water and ground.

GOT IT! I love the unusual and wide current this thing throws. much different than what I am used to. dont know that a second one will be needed. but would definately make some wild random flow.
see ya Terry

My LFS, Coral Reef Aquatics, has them 10% cheaper and that is not a sale price!

I have found several items at CRA much cheaper than the internet. John has a TAAM controller that is $20.00 cheaper than Maring Depot (and you don't have to pay shipping).

If your LFS (independent) is just a little bit higher, we still need to support them. The more we buy, the cheaper they can sell.

We need to ask ourselves, what if buying on the internet bankrupts our LFS? Then what will we do?

I buy on the internet when I can't get it at the LFS.:bum:

I know what your saying about buying at the LFS,and i'm all for it.I had alot of things to buy,not just the powerhead. If i was just buying the powerhead,i'd pay the 10 or20 bucks more at the LFS.

Not necessarily! If it's a minor induced leak and your tank is properly grounded it could be disipated. A better test would be to temporarily remove the tank ground then dip your fingers. If you feel a tingling at the quick of the fingernails, it's faulty.

Guys Its very simple to test stray current.. The best way is to fill a bucket with a couple gallons of SALT water. Remove the pump from your tank place it in the bucket.. Take a Voltage meter and stick one probe in the water and the other to your house ground.. If you get a reading then you have a problem. HTH I have a 3 I got from CRA. I'll test it and let you know if mine has a problem..

This is shocking!

Sorry, couldn't resist....but if I could resist I'd be a resistor and maybe then I wouldn't get shocked. :D

I heard early last week (John told me what the manufacturer said in their email to him) that there had been only two cases of this and they were limited to Koralia 2's and 3's. Out of hundreds of them sold, the rate of failures is very low so far.

We really need to equip ourselves with not only a GFCI but also a grounding probe. GFCI supposedly triggers around 0.2 ampares which can be fatal. A grounding probe is useful to eliminate an annoying low leakage current (often measured in microamps) that causes your hand to tingle.

I understand that small leakage current can aggrevate our livestock as well to the point they develop a behavioral problem or a sickness over time.
