Krylon Paint Curing before becoming inert

I painted some PVC black with Krylon Fusion spraypaint and was wondering how long it would take before becoming "inert enough" to be put into the tank? Does anybody have any info on this?

It says it is dry to touch within 15 mins, 1 hour for handling, and 7 days for "chip resistant". I don't think I need to wait a week though.

The reason I am asking is because I put it in a new tank after 24 hours, and started filling it with new saltwater. I moved my old liverock from my established reef and put it in there along with some of my fish.

In the morning, one fish was dead and my galaxy coral RTN'd. I checked the pH and temp before placing them in last night. The water is well aerated as I have a Tunze Stream going in it. The saltwater was cured for 24 hours before adding to the new tank.

I can't think of any other culprit that could have caused the death of these two guys. I almost think it's chemically related, but I'm trying to rule out one thing at a time...

shoot, i hate to hear stories like that, but i think your right, 1 week seems a bit much for spraypaint. did you check your params? the only thing i can think of besides that is perhaps shock, did you acclimate them or just add them to the tank? and what kind of fish was it? hardy or delicate? hope everything clears up and no more problems arise.

Thanks Colin, I did acclimate them for over an hour. It was a blackcap basslet which I've had for months which I would consider a hardy fish. Funny how my Regal Angel and Yellow Tang survived though, I moved them back to my old tank since I don't want to kill them off too :(

From the sounds of things you didnt let the new tank cycle, even though you did acclimate everything and used cycled rock from an existing tank you should have let the new tank cycle before adding any livestock, but thats just my opinion.

25% of the water is from my old reef (established 3 years ago) which contains SPS and other LPS corals.

Also, wouldn't you think that a Regal Angel would be more sensitive to a tank cycle than a blackcap basslet?

I remember there was a debate on this before whether the tank would cycle if using new water, and I believe the major consensus was that it would not cycle since there are quite a few people that perform 100% water changes.
