Does anyone know if you still need the bio balls in a Wet Dry if you have alot of L.R.? Are they necessary?

no u dont need bio balls plus they cause excess nitrates.
agrre they seem to be a nusance anymore. should I remove them slowly over time or just take them all out at once? I dont want to throw anything out of whack just get rid of the phosphate trap. How about the sponge can that stay?
