Lava Rock?

Hi,
Is it safe to use lava rock from Home Depot? It's the stuff they sell for grills.
Well cleaned and washed of course.

Thanks

I'm not positive but I looked into this for my refugium and everything I read said dont use lava rocks because some types can leach unwanted metals into the tank..... so to be safe i used some live rock.
Good luck with your tank going forward..

Not BBQ

Not BBQ

Good for a BBQ, bad for a reef system.

Technically these are for grills. (-; BBQ is smoking meats and other things. Grilling is what you do to burgers, dogs, and steaks.

But you are correct I think. Opinions seem very divided but a comment about not knowing what other mineral content might be in them is troubling, like copper, iron, etc. So I'm not going to take the chance.

Thanks

I would only use rock that is for reef aquariums. You want limestone that is actually from a coral reef or the remains of a coral reef on land. If you want to save money, you can buy dry rock. Or you can buy some other reefer’s rock on Craigslist. Be forewarned, the cheaper stuff should probably be washed and soaked in salt water for eeeks to get out possible nutrients.

Go to a garden place and they should have large Lava Rock. I have used lava rock in the past as base rock with no issues (and they even seeded). Just make sure you rinse, bleach, rinse and air dry.
