Leather coral

Had this leather for about 4 years, was given to me by guy i bought 1st tank from. It used to have loads of polyps on it but in this tank it just looked looks flat and boring. Do you think too much light is the cause? It still changes shape often and waves with the flow. If I have to move it the rock it's on is quite large and suppose the sandbed might be best?
